there are certainly some well-known republican politicians, for example bobby jindal and former southarolina governor and u.n. ambassador nikki haley. but indians, you say, vote overwhelmingly democratic. why is that? >> i mean, i think the simplest answer is that the democratic party is more open to immigrants than the republican party. this was not always the case. when george bush was the president, you did see the possibility of more indian americans moving towards the republican party. because they had many features that were sort of part of the republican party, i want to stress, the old republican party, because now it is a caricature of its former self. but indian americans were entrepreneurs. entrepreneurs want less regular and, which is what the republican party wants. they want lower taxes, their wealthier, they are socially more conservative. the family value thing comes from the republican party. all of these would have nudged or slowly taken more indians towards the republican party, but two things happen. one is, since most indian americans are not christian, the influe
