bode miller, eighth place. cme on, rachel, what happened? >> yeah, definitely a big disappointment. he oldest alpine skier to ever even stand on a medal stand at an olympic event. you know, 36, for all the elderly people out there. did not happen for him today. the downhill is his best event, and he has been near perfect in the training runs here, really expected to run away with this. but the conditions were a little bit different this morning. it was a lot cloudier, he seemed a little thrown by that. still had a pretty decent start. had a great ferris split time, but he hit at least one gate, had a little bobble and another one, and you could just see when he crossed the finish line, guys, he was crushed. he knew that he was not going to medal here. he put his hands on his knees, just slumped over and sat on his skis for a while. later, he just seemed stunned.s like he really didn't know what happened. now, he does have a few more events here. he's got at least three more races and in one of them, he's the defending olympic champion. he does have another chance to get that oldest s

is bode miller considered the favorite?ping. >> you know, i don't know that you can call him the favorite but he's certainly among the pave rats. there have been would training runs so far. bodey finished first and third and n the two training runs. it has been an uneven last couple of years for miller. he was injured most of last year and out the last time he won a world cup race was actually more than two years ago. it was december of 2011. it was downhill in beaver creek. his times this week, as you mentioned, have been very, very fast. he is in good form. he has a lot of experience. he is 36 years old. this is his fifth olympic games. i think he mellowed and finally figured out exactly how this all works coming off of his first gold medal, four years ago. that was in the super combined and does, interestingly enough, include part of the competition is downhill. it is the super g and downhill together. he has some zbm credentials in the downhill. >> yes, for sure. you mentionted all those olympics he participated in. i d

when that was announced, bode miller got tears in his eyes and got incredibly emotional because you'llber that last year, he lost his younger brother who was a snowboarder, who hoped to be at these olympics with bode, and he died of a seizure in mammoth lakes, california. and miller said today that it all sort of just came together for him. he skied very raw. and when he got down there, his emotions just overwhelmed him and he thought of the brother that he lost, alex. >> yeah. well, that was a very poignant moment, no doubt, but he's the number one record-holder, right, of olympics for men's skiers? he's got the most medals? >> reporter: he's got the most medals of any u.s. alpine skier. he is the oldest alpine skier to win a medal. and he has tied bonnie blair with six olympic medals. >> that's pretty wonderful. team usa not just about bode. some others picked up medals as well. who else came out a winner? >> reporter: andrew weibrect has a story, too. he had surgery on both his soldiers. got demoted to the b team in u.s. skiing. in skeleton, matt antoine picked up a bronze medal. >>
