michael steel former adviser to jeb bush and spokesman for john boehner.ll senior director for progressive programming on sirius xm who worked on hillary clinton's campaign. good to see you both this morning. michael, what do you think? does walsh's entrance into the race change anything? >> i don't think it makes it less likely that president trump will be the nominee of the republican party in 2020. there are two important facts here. one, every incumbent president who has failed to be re-elected in the modern era faced a primary challenge. every incumbent president that has been re-elected in the modern era did not. president trump now has two primary challengers and i think is likely to get a third in the form of mark sanford. i think this is a sign that there is a portion of the republican party that still wants a sane, rational, honest, inclusive, conservative, reform minded republican party and they do not see themselves getting that with president trump as their nominee. do i think he is going to win the nomination? no. do i think it's an important

. >> i want to bring in michael steele who served as spokesman to john boehner. michael, let me begin with you and get your reaction. the politics in all of this, over the past couple of days if you take what mitch mcconnell has said about possibly making some movement forward, the president coming out saying he is open to background checks, he has the support at least he sees it politically to do something like that, do you think this is a window of opportunity? are we repeating things we have said in the past similar to parkland where nothing got done? >> we have a window offen opportunity. the nra endorsement -- the nra is in turmoil. they have a choice to make whether they will fight like a cornered badger or work with the president to get some sort of sensible changes enacted into law. the nra endorsement matters in republican primaries. the only thing bigger than second amendment support in the republican primaries is support from the president of the united states. support from president trump. if president trump gets out and is clear and consistent on the
