boeing and airbus are increasing their rates of production. that means new and better business for companies in the u.k.. >> are you looking for big orders this time around? some analysts have been talking about slightly moderated expectations compared to the last couple of years. >> we saw last year was a huge year in terms of new orders. i think we will more likely see those from faster growing parts of the global economy. the middle east, southeast asia, south america. i think we are seeing a situation where we have got record backlogs in terms of aircraft order. for most of the industry it's about how can we raise our level of production and live consistently for those customers. showcaseas a domestic years ago. it's now an international showcase. international contributors come here. how do they stay relative when there is so much competition from newer upstarts? >> history is important. understands what it is. that helps us. also i think it's a place where everyone is comfortable coming. some of the shows in other parts of the world tend

stephanie, this is boeing 777, i hear. boeing 777 malaysian airlines plane mh 17. i think we have a picture of a similar plane. this is it. and this is the plane that is said to have gone down on the border between russia and ukraine, it had 295 people on board. 280 passengers and 15 crew members. stephanie, tell us about the safety record of malaysia airlines. obviously we all remember the missing malaysia airlines plane which was heading to beijing with 270 people on board. but this is an airline which over all has a very good safety record. >> yes, it does have a very good safety record, and from my memory it has no recent major accidents or incidents other than obviously the malaysian airlines plane which went missing in march on its way to beijing that was also a boeing 777, which as an airline -- or sorry as an aircraft itself has a very good safety record. so as i said before, this obviously is a very great tragedy to -- to lose to -- two aircraft in a matter of months. obviously the circumstances of this disappearance are -- is under speculation at the mome

that plane, a boeing 777, one of the strongest in the world. tonight u.s. officials say they believe it was shot down. this evening we have team coverage across the globe and we begin with abc's chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz. >> reporter: there in the distance, that burst of flame, the flight with 150,000 pounds of fuel crashed down. then the smoke plumes filling the horizon, those white streaks, debris from the plane littering the sky. as cameras reached the scene in the ukrainian country side, utter devastation. flames in one part of the wreckage, the massive boeing 777 with its 295 souls on board shattered on the earth. as far as the eye can see, an apocalyptic scene. but the debris was spread across ten miles, and in other spots, there is no fire. the malaysian airline colors visible, clothing, passports, a vacationer's travel guide, a sign that these are the parts of the plane blown up in the sky. flight 17 took after from amsterdam just after noon local time. just over four hours into the flight to kuala lumpur, malaysia, cruising

if you take a look at shares of boeing, when this first was reported, there was a dip for shares of boeinghe day has gone on, the stock has come back primarily because initially the concern was could this have been something mechanical that happened and if so that has far greater implications for boeing than if it was shot down. again, we don't know exactly what happened here. but a couple of things to keep in mind. the last contact with mh-17 happened at an altitude of 33,000 feet. there was no disstress signal. in other words, if this was a plane crash where something mechanical happened and they started losing altitude quickly, the contact would have been happening at a lower level, there probably would have been a distress signal, there were neither of those. the other question is how wide is the debris field? if you have something scattered over wide range that would seem toind kate perhaps there was a catastrophic event at 33,000 feet spreading the debris over a wide area as opposed to if the plane had something mechanical that happened and it went almost straight down into the groun
