while du bois was there. and that is the nationalism of the 19th century in germany and italy and europe it was cosmopolitan in the sense that the nationalist sought nations among nations each of which had a fate if the destiny worth pursuing. du bois said the chorus of humanity only works if we all contribute our part. without that we cannot make the harmony that is the human harmony. far from thinking where our nation is necessarily over against other nations. it is distinct. it is special. it is mine. and it maybe from my point of view better. but it isn't necessarily opposed to other nations. you need all of the nations to make history work. history requires all of them and so the thought -- the point was made that this form of cosmopolitan nationalism is central to this. he makes this point and he is against it. he thinks this is a problem. so the 20th century german nationism thought cosmopolitan could be an insult. but you have to understand this was one that could not be an insult. it was the natural
