those law enforcement concerns were underscored for us, when we spent a day riding along with eric bolden. born and raised in sarasota, florida. >> it's sad to say but you know you do have a lot of police officers that they live on edge because of things they see in the media with african americans and so forth. i have a 17-year-old son. i feel bad but i have to have those same conversations with him. on what he need to do if he needs to do if he has an interaction or a confrontation with an officer, just a contact on the street. i don't believe that caucasians, a lot of caucasians have to worry about having those same conversations. even myself as an officer there have been times when i have been traveling and i have been stopped on the road, when i see the lights in my rearview mirror, i still don't know how well trained this officer is that's coming up to my door. >> the training sergeant bolden is referring to can mean the difference between life and death. which brings us to the city of richmond, california. historically it's been one of the most violent cities in the bay area. but w

let's talk about it with scott bolden defense attorney and managing partner with reed smith.he small portion we don't see. you just heard there from stephens' attorney who said if officer lin was afraid he was afraid without justification and unreasonably. do you agree with that? >> well i'm not involved in the case but thank you for having me. the reality on all of this is is that those four seconds is only dontrell and that police officer know exactly what that is. but whether it was reckless or reasonable will be a question for the jury for one thing and second of all, the credibility of both the plaintiff and the defendant will be an issue also. here the officer said he believed it was a gun. it turned out to be a cell phone. but if you look at the video, and i've looked at it point by point, dontrell stephens was on the phone when he was being pursued by police over a traffic stop. he took the phone from his ear, put it in his right hand right in front of the police officer as he got out of the car, because it's on the camera itself. as a result there will be some credib
