about ten days ago marin county officials were at bolinas beach making a routine inspection for a permit request when they noticed something strange, white crusty areas along the bluffs in the area known as big mesa and there appeared to be fluid seeping out of the cliff as well. >> so we took some samples in a few different areas where we saw the substance coming from the bluffs, tested it and the result was high levels of bacteria associated with human waste, so wastewater or some sort of sewage. >> reporter: on this day the bluff was still seeping liquid in places and up close it does smell like raw sewage. there are homes above the bluffs, now them on septic systems, so that could be the source, but the problem seems to extend beyond one person's failing septic tank. >> there is wastewater leeching from several points along the bluffs about a mile and a half. we are bringing in technical experts to help us evaluate and test what might be causing the issue. >> reporter: because of the threat of illness, the county officially closed most of bolinas beach until they can find and correct
