corey boles is keeping track of this for "dow jones newswires." good morning.e saw the vote yesterday on the house floor. a stalemate between congressional democrats and republicans. the president holding firm that he wants congress to pass the compromise that the senate voted on over the weekend. what happens next? caller: a very good question. with both the senate and house having departed for the christmas holidays -- holidays, they will have to call the leaders back to washington. asking them to take a vote, right now the senate is sticking to its position of a short-term extension of the payroll tax holiday as well, with federal jobless payroll benefits. saying that they should sit down and strike a longer term. republicans said no, that you need to come back to washington and approve our short-term measure. so, we're waiting for one side or the other to break. i have been saying this all we, but the parties seem willing to let this tax cut expire under the economic conditions that exist in the u.s.. as i said this morning, it is hard to see how they do it

chance to get our act together is in 2013 when we have to enact something along the lines of simpson boleses where you have to plan a ten-year significant investment in repairing our infrastructure. those are the crucial things we've got to get done as a country. and i think we can in 2013. i want to go back to the february 29th for a minute. i think the point that you made is right on point. republicans have a deuce of a time because their way to pay for it is by freezing federal employees for five years. if i'm a democrat, i put an amendment to freeze congressional pay for five years, number one. number two, to cut back unemployment benefits from 99 weeks to 59 weeks. those are things that hurt working people. they can't make that their waterloo. they can't make that where they make their stand or they're just playing the whole song all over again that got them in trouble. so we need a mature compromise. are they going to vote for the millionaires tax? no. they're not going to vote for it. we've got to find a mature compromise and get it done, get it done for the country. maybe that's th

and, you know, i'm not -- i'm one who thinks that simpson boles was a very, very thoughtful package andd see what the president -- what the american people think about it because they really haven't thought about it as intensively as i think it deserves. host: when you say take up that, where, when, how? guest: our budget committee could take it up and certainly the senate could and we could have hearings on it. i really think ways and means could as well. i think that's an important thing for us to do. the american people get what the media feed them for the most part. and they're getting everything in kind of polar perspectives. i don't think that the american people really know the extent of what simpson-bowles proposed or how it might impact them and that's what most people are concerned with. i was involved for over a year on a daily basis on health care reform and that's what people wanted to know. how does it affect me? i understand, especially with health care, which is a very personal thing. we need to let the american people know and that's our fault for not communicating as e
