welcome i'm jamie boll. >> i'm molly grantham. >> all those stories in a moment but first breaking news in the redistricting fight going on in north carolina. alex giles with new information live in the alert center. >> we just learned that the governor called in legislators redistricting it will happen thursday at 10:00 a.m. to redraw the maps. we touched on this earlier. these two maps the one on the top is the current map and the proposed is the new one shared by republican leaders of the general assembly today. and the 12th district one called into question. that is the new site of it in mecklenberg county. before we look up there and it looked like that in orange there from mecklenburg to counties to the north. and you will remember a panel called the districts illegal. racial gerry mannedders favored to minority candidates. lawmakers have been having the public hearings to get the input so this is the latest that we have learned here. a special session to talk about redistricting. >> and something that is the two that we were talking about that was going to have to be redrawn. it

. >> i'm jamie boll in for paul cameron. a district court ruled the lines for north carolina's first and 12th districts were unconstitutional and based on race. lawmakers have until tomorrow 0 to redraw the lines and we are on your side bringing you team >> steve crump is looking at the political implications of the changes. >> first, david whisenant is following this in raleigh. >> governor mccrory called for the special session today so the house and senate could beat the friday deadline given by federal judges to have new lines in place. >> currently is on pace to pass through today. >> that was the senator today. later, things slowed down as the newly drawn map was debated in committee. amended slightly then approved then taken to the senate where several democratic lawmakers questioned if this new map did not go too far in the other direction. senator russo defended the map and it did pass the senate. >> we need to have compact districts where the areas of community are together and they

anchor jamie boll is here with where the race stands tonight. >> well, maureen one thing is clear donald trump appears to be in good shape to claim another victory next saturday. he has 36% of voter support in a new poll out today. ted cruz in second place with 19%. followed by marco rubio not far with 15%. and jeb bush with 11%. and john kasich at 9%. but that is a bump after his second place finish in new hampshire. trump seems confident about south carolina. he spent his day not there, but in louisiana. his opponents were back in the palmetto state and courting the evangelical vote. a summit in greenville. carson and ted cruz spoke at a faith-based event at winthrop university. here is why... in the winthrop poll released in december 57% of voters surveyed would describe themselves as born again christians. a second or third place finish could be crucial for candidates who want to stay in the game for up coming contests. after south carolina's primary it's on to nevada. which holds a caucus three days later. maureen? >> and the candidates will make their pitch to south carolina voters

. >> i'm jamie boll. thank you for joining us. we appreciate you being here. we want to start with the weather today because that is what everyone is talking about. polar opposite from yesterday. >> and more rain is moving our way tonight. meteorologist leigh brock is tracking it all in the first alert weather center. >> that is right. most of it is going to fall when you are asleep. in the highest elevations more snow but let's check out the temperatures that is the best part of the day. 56 in charlotte. 58 in i wadesboro. 57 in gags yeah and 51 in statesville. warmer than yesterday but again after we had the break we have more precipitation coming in. already we have a couple showers. here is where we have snow falling this is avery county and stretching up into watauga county. newland, plum tree or banner elk and boone you have snow flurries that way. but this is what is pulling into the picture for the evening two inches of snow. right now only one advisory a winter weather advisory for avery county. the rest of us are looking at this coming this way. for

. >> i'm jamie boll. glad you are with us. a fight at friday's basketball game between salisbury high school and north rowan high caught on camera. both teams a good chance of going to the state playoffs but are now done with the season. but school leaders are appealing the punishment. david whisenant live in salisbury this afternoon. and both teams have been banned from post season play? >> yes, that is how it stands now. the players on both teams were all suspended for the next two contests and that means even if they play spring sport it is would carry over into track or baseball. this video a viewer sent me it shows the aftermath of the fight but this is what resulted in that punishment. the association says when players come off the bench they are automatically ejected and suspended. this started with one player throwing a punch and the benches cleared and as you can see people in the stands came out on to the court. many parents are upset because players that had nothing to do with the fight are being punished. and the s

welcome back to first at 4:00 i'm jamie boll. >> i'm brigida mack. thank you for joining us on this thursday. concerned parents have been vocal about their feelings on forced busing and student assignment for today we are hearing from a student about the controversial topic. wbtv anchor maureen o'boyle has details on a packed meeting today. >> brigida, judging from the turnout of today's meeting it is clear that student assignment is an issue that matters to both parents and students. more than 100 people showed up for the forum here at cms' smith family center. some board members were there to answer questions and calm fears of forced busing. as i said, they also had students there. they wanted to voice their voice heard in the discussion. hannah is a senior at independence. we asked her what students are saying about the posse of school boundaries changing to create more diverse schools. >> they are not comfortable with it. they want to be with the ones they went to elementary and middle school with and that is who we are comfortable with. and they

i'm jamie boll. >> i'm brigida mack. thank you for joining us. a community forum about student assignment will be held tonight and school district leaders are working to get parents to fill out a survey to help create a plan. dedrick russell joining us live now. >> yeah, brigida, i can tell you the student assignment plan why school board members are going to the community to talk about this process and communicate with parents. one of cms' goals is to maximize building use and to decrease the number of schools that have a large concentration of poor and high need students. cms wants more schools to like like this, diverse. the theory is academic achievement can happen quicker if students are surrounded by a variety of students from races and economic statuses. research proves that is what happens when a classroom is diverse. some parents think one of the goals means forced busing were board members are having the forums to try to clear the air and go one-on-one with the parents to dispel some of the rumors and want to encourage parents and the c

welcome back i'm jamie boll. you can see this powerful system down here along the gulf coast on our radar moving into this direction. >> thunderstorms, heavy rain and flooding all a concern. i've moved here to the first alert weather center with meteorologist leigh brock. what would you say is the biggest concern? >> the biggest concern may be the heavy rain the possibility for localized flooding and gusty the possibility of thunderstorms. so there are a couple things we are watching. the long-term system is in texas. pushing through louisiana and mississippi you can see the strong thunderstorms they have a tornado watch down there. and we are not doing bad right now. and we have mainly cloudy skies but other than a couple of stray showers you may be thinking there is no way we could have severe weather tomorrow. but the temperature is going to play into this. we start in the 40s and low 50s. check out the high temperatures and this is going to happen over a matter of hours. over the course of a couple hours we g

i'm jamie boll andnd am in the first alert weather center with meteorologist leigh brock and we are seeing the heavier rain in mecklenberg county getting some of the heaviest. and the main roads have been treated but the side roads you have to watch out for. right. if the roads are treated it should be melting but not every road has been treated. we have a winter storm warning for our mountain counties and burke, caldwell, alexander. winter weather advisory for post of the heart of the wbtv viewing area and in south carolina a freezing rain advisory. at least for a couple more hours. this is the precipitation falling. so far just light freezing rain in the foothills but more rain coming from the south and the temperatures makes it freezing rain. this is around charlotte. going to concentrate there first. 485. if you are traveling home on 485 if you know someone for rush-hour around 485, that could be a problem. around the pineville area, matthews, indian trail and mint hill and harrisburg all of these areas have rain falling and it could be falling as freezing rain. we need everyone to be

welcome back i'm jamie boll. >> i'm brigida mack. thank you for joining us. first at 4:00 these three men scheduled to appear in court tomorrow. police arrested them after two vehicles and a hotel lobly hit in a hail of but lets. the shots fired near the sky condominiums or south caldwell street. the good news is no one was hurt but one of the men was carrying an ak47 in uptown and dedrick dedrick is there a link between this and the ciaa tournament? >> well, all police are saying right now is the suspects they were in town for the ciaa not sure in what capacity. but this shooting has manied many concerned. and look the the damage. a van full of bullet holes, 40-50 rounds. the crime happened blocks away from police headquarters and that may be one reason why the suspects were quickly caught. here is what we know... a transit officer heard the gunshots and that officer got the license tag number of the suspect's car. once that information was turned in police received it and they spotted the car and stopped it. once that car was stopped the suspect ran out of
