he knew pam bondi for years.ached out to pam bondi's office and the trump campaign for details about pam bondi and donald trump's years' long relationship. how long have they been acquainted. we've asked if they've ever done any events or held any meetings before he threw $25,000 her way in 2013. we should say, as far as we can tell from the florida press, there is no public record of any joint appearances or meetings or other signs of a long-standing friendship between them. we have not at least been able to find one in the public record. we've asked the trump campaign and pam bondi's office if they have any record of this allegedly years' long relationship which preceded this donation which donald trump described to reporters today. we haven't heard back. joining us now, david farenthold, reporter with "the washington post." trying to untangle the world of donald trump's money. mr. farenthold, thank you for your time tonight. >> great to be here. >> in terms of the pam bondi donation, i want you to give me the

that pucontribution a after that check came in, bondi dropped the investigation. >> bondi did receive a contribution, which is illegal under campaign finance laws. but instead of disclosing the contribution, the trump foundation claimed it had given money to a different nonprofit with a similar name, a kansas-based group called justice for all without the "and." in march after the watch dog group citizens for responsibilities and ethics in washington filed a complaint about the donation to the irs, the trump campaign called the contribution mixup a mistake. but the story returned last week when "the washington post" reported that donald trump had to pay the irs a $2,500 penalty for violating the law. this week the story took on the whiff of full-blown scandal when trump said this. >> what were you hoping to get out of this donation? >> i've just known pam bondi for years, i have a lot of respect for her. i never spoke to her about that at all. >> trump's statement raised questions about what he said contradicted a bondi adviser who told the press that bondi personally solicited him hi

one by pam bondy and one by donald trump. the donation was made four days after it announced that bondy said she was considering joining a new york state investigation into trump university. >> you know what c is for? coincidence. >> that's what it is. c is for coincidence and pam being bullied. the donation violated political rules. trump and his team also failed to disclose the gift to the irs instead reporting that the donation was given to an unrelated group with a similar name effectively obscuring the contributio contribution. trump paid the $205,000 penalty imposed on his foundation by the irs for the errors. therefore, admitting there was a "error" and also reimbursed the foundation the full amount from his personal account. lovely. i guess in a way just saying don't investigate, i'll contribute to you. i won't investigate. i'll take your contribution. quid pro quo. "new york times" reports that trump circumventing rules governing contributions and lobbying. in the 1990s the federal election fined trump for exceeding

trump says it simply reflected his respect for bondi. he's posted in the past that when he gives money to politicians, they do what he tells them. organizations like the trump organization are not allowed to make donations. now trump also held a fund-raiser for bondi at his mar-a-lago result. here are the details. sam stein is one of the authors of that report. it's not just the holding of the event at mar-a-lago after it's been dropped. it's the price tag. explain this to me. >> so mar-a-lago is not a cheap resort to rent. trump has himself used it during the campaign and he's charged his own donors. he's charged his own campaign about $140,000 per event. so expensive. but when pam bondi was doing a fund-raiser at mar-a-lago, the charge was about $5,000. so relatively cheap fund-raiser, which in itself is very valuable for a campaign. if pam bondi's re-election campaign doesn't have to dole out $10,000, $20,000, $30,000, that helps with her. this was not just a large in terms of gathering donors but giving her what appears to be a fairl
