let's go now to meteorologist bonnie schneider. bonnie, it is a mess out there. >> it is, victor and unfortunately, while one storm exits another one comes in. this one is bringing freezing rain to the mid south. the same region that sought heavy snow on christmas day, we're watching for the freezing rain to continue throughout the afternoon, you can see some heavy rain in louisiana. we actually have some thunderstorms rolling through and that's also impacting mississippi as well. but it's really the freezing rain i'm most concerned with. as the water hits any area if we zoom in, the temperatures are teetering right around the freezing mark so it's definitely cold across little rock and oklahoma city. in the northeast, cold air has filtered in behind the exiting system so now we have temperatures right below freezing in new york city. let's look at the storm system as it works its way across the east for the weekend. this is going to be a big snowmaker for areas into ohio on top of what we've already seen and we're watching as we g

good morning, bonnie. >> good morning, ali. right now we're seeing heavy rain across the new york city metropolitan area and that is impacting travel at this hour. this just in. we have one-hour delays at la guardia in queens. even though the rain isn't as strong in that region, we're getting fierce wind. look at the heavy rain hitting providence and boston and to the north it's all snow. check out the snowfall totals from this storm. almost two feet in illinois. many cities shattered records. we had a record in little rock, arkansas, on christmas day. never in 86 years have they seen so much snow on christmas. the temperatures are brutally cold. ines in syracuse, new york, it was 20 years. the colder air will filter in and temperatures will plummet down across much of the regions you see here. wind and rain impacting airports. likely to see more delays in philadelphia and washington, and heavy accumulation, a foot or more, all the way across new england. so this is going to impact vermont, maine, new hampshire, upstate new yor

meteorologist bonnie schneider tracking this storm.ventually this thing will push out into the ocean. the question is when. >> eventually. not even tomorrow. we'll still be talking about it then. it's such a wide area of impact, millions of americans affected by this storm even as early as we talked about it on christmas eve. we're looking at heavy snow in places like upstate new york. i want to show you video outside of buffalo in hamburg. the snowplows they're used to snow there, of course. look at this. it's tough to get traction when the snow comes in so fast on any roadways. so many people are out and about. the wind speeds are likely to pick up, especially along the coastal areas in boston. that's one of the reasons that we're looking at windy conditions, stretching as far to the south as the mountains of virginia and certainly up into new england. rain and wind combined will impact air travel today in new york city, all major airports, newark, new jersey, philadelphia certainly washington, boston you're looking at rain and very

bonnie schneider joins us now. hopefully, bonnie, most people, well, most people are where they expected to be this christmas day. >> i hope so. because if they're traveling across the south, dangerous weather is erupting rights now. we have a tornado watch that's in effect until 1:00 p.m. central time for much of southern louisiana. this includes baton rouge, hammond, new orleans,i nickel-sized hail across texas. look at the frequent lightning hammering the dallas area right now. you're seeing that sweeping across mississippi and into jackson and this is a very dangerous situation for travel, not just in terms of damages areas where we're having strong wind but we could likely see tornados. the area in orange indicates a moderate risk for tornados. what does that mean? it means that we have a 30 to 60% escalated risk in this region right here for severe weather to break out for today. so the weather is likely to get worse as we go through the afternoon when we're talking about the threat of severe thunderstorms. i

bonnie schneider thank you.abama, was hit especially hard. tens of thousands of people there still in the dark. on the phone is john kilcullen, director of emergency management there. good morning. glad you're with us. as the sun comes up, what is the main challenge as you try to clean up? >> our main is power restoration, recent update we have about 7,300 customers that are currently out of power, that's down from a high of about 23,000 last night so there's been progress in that area. debris removal, there's a lot of storm debris that will need to be cleaned up that's blocking some roads and then we will continue with our damage assessment, and then provide whatever assistance we can do with businesses and homeowners that are doing emergency repairs to damaged structured. >> do you have any idea of how many people are out of a home? have you been able to do any surveys yet? >> you know, damage to some residences is extensive in some portions of the city. we did have one shelter available, only about four peopl

meteorologist bonnie schneider tells us what to look out for. bonnie?w maker across parts of southeastern massachusetts and into rhode island, today and tonight, earlier this morning the snow came down heavy and hard in washington, d.c., briefly. we saw big white fluffy flakes outside of the white house and the capitol and we saw the snow move into new york city in the early afternoon hours. the snow was pretty on saturday, but as we move into the evening hours of tonight, of course we are looking at the snow to even accumulate more, and for areas in the northeast, this is going to be heavy snow and substantial. now, the latest models are taking us to a foot in parts of connecticut and rhode island. so this is going to be plowable, shovelable snow early in the morning as this low pressure center works its way up across new england. it is getting closer to the coast than the original path indicated, because of the westward track we are looking for heavier bands of snow as far north as coastal maine, you are likely to see accumulations of up to a foot of
