bonnie schneider joins me at the severe weather center. , this doesn't look like it's going to be ending anytime soon in terms of the damage. what about the storm itself? >> we are dealing with severe weather across parts of the southeast. there's no tornado watches or warnings as of present. it's incredible looking back at yet. this is google earth. we put down how many tornadoes occurred. 730 reports of severe weather. 95 reports of tornadoes. that is an incredibly high number. we are getting reports in. once they get around to heading out to all the locations, it's going to take awhile. they are will be able to determine how strong the tornadoes were, where the path was and how wide as well. looking at the severe weather threat, here is what we are facing. heavy rain. there's a flash flood warning to the northeast of atlanta. we are watching for severe weather to break out. this is a training effect. imagine trains going across the track in the same place over and over again. we are seeing severe thunderstorm warnings popping up over sou

but first we want to check in with our bonnie schneider who's keeping up with the latest watches and ngs. bonnie? >> we have two tornado warnings right now. they're stretching over two states, georgia as well as florida. take a look. the first one is covering a portion of florida and georgia right along the border. let's zoom in and i'll show you where it is. it's really -- we receive a lot of strong storms to the east of tallahassee. let's zoom in. it looks like another one pops up in advance of this one, affecting cities like havana, quincy. right now it's affecting decatur county in southwest georgia. this tornado warning continuing until 10:45 eastern time. it all began around 9:54. right now the movement of this storm system is at 35 miles an hour. you can see the original tornado warning just to the west of it. now we head to southern georgia. this is southeast georgia. i have good news to report as we speak. this was a tornado warning but luckily it's expired and now judging by the orange box you see here, it is now a severe thunderstorm warning not to be taken lightly as well

meteorologist bonnie schneider is in the severe weather center with the latest on the areas that may still be hit, bonnie. >> that's right, david. this is not over yet. i wish i could say the threat has passed, but it has not, especially for georgia and for florida. that's where we have tornado warnings right now when i go to the map and show you where they are. you'll see they're highlighted in pink. that's where the tornado warnings are. i have three to tell you about. let's go to the south right along the georgia/florida border. we have warnings in northeastern florida. south central georgia, southeastern decatur county, also in southwest georgia and southern grady county. and now as we head further to the east, we see a second one. these tornado warnings have another 15 minutes to go, but, still, if you're in morvin or georgia, southeast georgia, take cover. this is to the north of valdosta. we're seeing very strong thunderstorms, supercell thunderstorms that show rotation that could produce a tornado at any time. we're watching for a tornado watch. this is important to note becau

. >>> and bonnie schneider, are you into the bracket thing? admit, not really. >> neither are we sdm. >> well, we know you are into the weather right now. what's going on? >> for sure. that's a given. we'll start off, unfortunately, fred, we have weather we're watching, thunderstorms working their way across virginia. we were talking about the storms in south carolina earlier this afternoon. now, virginia impacted. two tornado warnings in effect. this is in southwest section of the state. into areas here, storms getting close to producing a tornado. we haven't seen that indicated there. they're capable of that. that's true for areas near ferrum in virginia. these warnings will expire, 5:15, 5:30, but it's important to note there's a wider area here that includes virginia and north carolina in the center of the state, including raleigh, durham, and the triangle area. this will go to the evening hours as well as the thunderstorm watch you see that goes pretty far south, down to jacksonville, florida. and here is a look at strong, powerful storms

bonnie schneider in the weather center subpoena lots of severe weatherthe horizon? >> right. today we were talking about a tornado warning just to the east of charleston, south carolina. that tornado warning expired but the threat of severe weather continues. you can see, heavy thunderstorms slamming into charleston. we have now four watch boxes in effect. so on the wider scale, the severe weather threat is extended all the way into west virginia. now northward. these storms are really getting powerful going through the afternoon. that's because the heating of the day tends to make the atmosphere more unstable and likely to get more severe weather. this means we could see large size hail with the system and a threat of candidates may exist possibly late other than. look at the line coming up across florida. jacksonville, your weather, intermittent in terms of rain, but we will see heavy downpours along i-10, into your region for the remay finder of the day today. severe storms working in advance of the cold front. seeing slightly cooler air. not much difference. incredibly wa

bonnie schneider with us now. you talk about the force of that tornado.w, over the last week, i think now when people see images like that, if everything hear a tornado coming their way and about the tips you and others give, you see the images. you do take it seriously the devastation it can cause. >> absolutely. one of the things that stood out to me in the video is the pieces of wood coming out like missiles. that's what happens during a tornado. anything that is average and ordinary that doesn't seem like kit hurt you can become a flying object and can come quickly. look at the debris coming off that building. you can see how fast it's moving. boy that, is real qula does a lot of damage. let's show what you is going on. i'm happy to report it's a much calmer day. we had a front that pushed through yesterday. severe weather to the southeast. now it's no longerment we're monitoring one area that still has some rain that we're keeping a watch on. there is san angelo into dallas, texas. dallas, you had storms yesterday. the rain in texas is beneficial. th

bonnie schneider, our resident sunshine meteorologist. how's it looking?normally see tropical paradise. talking about hawaii. >> right. hail. >> incredible. got to see the video of hail in hawaii. it's unusually -- to say the two together. we did see a lot of rain and a lot of thunderstorm activity in hawaii. take a look at these pictures. these are some large harreilsto. forms when the updraft is blowing ice particles up and down, like a popcorn popper. at some point the ice becomes heavy and falls. it caused damage. rainfall totals over the past week in hawaii, incredible. talking about more than a foot of rain in many locations. now, we do have rain right now in texas. it's not as bad as we just saw. just to let you know, rain steady and heavy throughout the day today and into the evening in dallas and san antonio and even into houston. a lot of it work towards oklahoma city and something to keep a watch on not just for today but for tomorrow. look at sunday's forecast. severe storms are possible for the dallas area. shreveport, louisiana and into arkan

thanks so much, bonnie schneider. your new book "extreme weather," very timely. >>> in small towns like henryville, indiana, the full extent of some of the damage may not even be known until search and rescue crews finish their work. that's where our chris welch is this morning. chris, give me an idea of what they're going to find when they get there. >> reporter: well, fred, we've seen widespread damage all over this region, but here in henryville, this is one of the hardest hit areas. i'm actually standing right in the middle of town and this is henryville high school or what was henryville high school and attached to it, henryville elementary schools. about 1400 students total go to the school. all of them made it out unharmed. the vast majority of them were given a warning about 20 minutes before the storm came through. they saw the report. they dismissed the students early. the high school students drove home. they were actually driving a few of the elementary students home when the bus driver saw a storm and sai
