let's go to meteorologist bonnie schneider for more on that winter weather advisory and this year's white christmas. good morning, bonnie, happy holidays. >> happy holidays to you as well, phillip. if you're where you need to be for this christmas morning, no problem. it's a pretty picture out there. the advisory will make travel a little more hazardous than we'd like for this christmas. not only do we have the snow that's fallen, we also have strong winds. it's all rain for cities like washington and new york city, but the winds will stay strong. many are under a wind advisory. 59 million people at risk for dangerous winds. gusts could climb up to 50 or even 55 miles per hour. got to see these temperatures because we're kind of wrapping up 2017 and with that we're seeing the cold blast of air. currently our wind chill in minneapolis is negative 19. it is very cold in detroit as well. and those colder numbers are pushing to the east. in fact, it feels like on wednesday we'll be feeling temperature about 15 degrees in new york city. so, look for some really cold numbers. for this christmas

and for that, we bring in msnbc meteorologist bonnie schneider. bonnie, what have you got? >> ayman, as anne is reporting, it is just so cold in times square, and the numbers will be going down from here. we're expectk the temperature to feel like it's negative 5 when the ball drops right at midnight. currently in new york city, the temperature's 14 degrees, so it's not much warmer than right now than it will be at that point, but we're looking for cold temperatures across the country, certainly even colder than what we're experiencing here in new york. minneapolis right now is negative 5. and those negative numbers are really going to be a problem going into the overnight low temperatures. but first, 163 million americans impacted today. they're under some sort of windchill advisory, meaning the temperature feels dangerously cold, and that will persist straight into 2018. we're not looking at any changes for a warm-up. this is new year's day, early in the morning. if you're up, we're going to be seeing temperatures feeling like they're well below zero, dangerously so for p

let's turn to bonnie schneider with how low we're going to go. >> one of the coldest ever. this is the temperature we'll see at midnight, 11 degrees, but the windchill, negative 5. outside in new york city right now, it's 14 degrees. so not much warmer at all. you can see the cold air across the country. these are current temperatures. the problem is it's going to get colder when we look morning lows. in terms of snow, erie getting a break after all the snow they saw this past week, but there are still so many, over 163 million americans right now under some sort of windchill advisory at presbyterient. that means by the time we get to new year's morning, these are the temperatures you'll face. a windchill in green bay of negative 30. through the week, is there a warmup? it depends on where you are. it goes from 15 to 17 in wichita from tuesday to thursday, but across the east, only getting colder. richmond, your high will go down to 7. really getting a frigid start to 2018. and it's going to continue for the middle to end of next week as well. look at the temperatures. frid

let's bring in bonnie schneider now for an historically cold night in many parts of the country. >> especiallye. we have 2 million people in times square. it's going to feel like it's negative 5 degrees when the ball drops, really cold. the actual temperature right around 10. currently, new york city is 15, so it's not much warmer, and it's hard to find any warm spots on the map unless you head south towards florida or to the southwest. in fact, 160 million americans impacted in some way by dangerous windchill for today. the problem is, is that this isn't going anywhere. this cold air is here to stay. the mornings ahead for new year's day are going to be bitterly cold in the upper midwest, down through areas of the southern plains. we're going to be seeing very cold temperatures stretching all the way into the end of the week, so it's not exactly warming up as you look towards chicago. the morning temperature on thursday will feel like it's negative 6, and that's from a temperature on tuesday of 4, so the numbers are going down for many, even into this first week of 2018. we are also watching

meteorologist bonnie schneider has more on the developing weather situation. snow, huh? >> that's right, richard, a white christmas for many. we're watching for snow across chicago, falling right now into cleveland and across the great lakes. this will work its way into interior new england for christmas day. so, it will hamper travel a bit, especially if you're driving in the northeast or the great lakes like on i-90. this is where we could see some slowdowns and poor visibility. give yourself extra time for this christmas. that will continue throughout the afternoon. another factor, if you're not seeing a white christmas, you're probably going to see a windy one. we have wind advisories with gusts up to 55 miles per hour. that includes new york city and boston, down through roanoke, virginia. we could see some tree limb damage and maybe even power outages as the winds will be strong. we'll see the winds and gusts pick up through much of christmas, but everyone's asking about a white christmas and where we'll see it. we'll see the snow through the rockies, the bitter co
