gloria borger has the latest. >> reporter: alex and christine, the fbi agents that raided michael cohen's home, office and hotel room on monday were looking for communications between then candidate trump and cohen and perhaps others about efforts to prevent the release of the infamous "access hollywood" tape. you remember this. it captured donald trump making lewd remarks about women before the election. the warrant specifically refe references trump in the search warrant. sources say it appeared in connection to the tape. this warrant is the first indication that the investigators suspect there was an evident to suppress the da-- effort to suppress the tape. we are also learning that investigators wanted records pertaining to bank fraud and wire fraud investigations and on top of that, the warrant involved communications about other potential negative information about trump that the campaign might have wanted to contain ahead of the election. what we don't know is what additional information that might be. alex and christine. >> gloria, thank you. >>> a former white house strategist st

gloria borger joins us with the exclusive. what are you learning about president trump and rod rosenstein? >> discussing with advisers whether he ought to fire the deputy attorney general. he has been in his crosshatch for quite some time. but the michael cohen raid has taken it to a different level. but, there are lots of different voices in that room. there are people trying to calm the president down and say wait, don't do anything yet. some of his attorneys are telling us that he is not going to fire rosenstein. some are saying rosenstein is conflicted witness here. we have a good case to make against him if we need to do that. and they also believe that you know, he is important to the mueller case because of course don't forget he wrote the memo about the firing of comey and they are saying look, this is a clear conflict and we can make that case and by the way, you have already made a good case about disqualifying the fbi because you think that their investigation has not been credible and has been contaminated. so the

let's look at this new reporting from gloria borger and the "wall street journal" tonight. one of the president's longtime lawyers, jay goldberg, he's been on the show before, warning the president days ago michael cohen would flip on him if he's faced with criminal charges. cohen has been one of the most loyal donald trump supporters, a real trump loyalist. is it surprising to you that theest oat least one of the president's allies is very publicly advising him to be wary of cohen? especially if you're under a federal investigation. >> you know, it's actually a little interesting, don, because if you think -- if everyone at home thinks if you were offered a benefit in exchange for testifying about somebody you knew -- a friend of yours committing a serious federal crime, the first thing you need to ask yourself is would you be able to testify? i would tell you i don't know of anybody who's committed serious federal crimes. i haven't witnessed any serious crimes being committed. i mean, what's interesting here is, the only reason you need to be worried about somebody flni f

that might not be a surprise, it did surprise a lot of people, though, this conversation that gloria borger was speaking with about trump's former attorney and his advice that he gave the president, which essentially was do not trust michael cohen. and goldberg, jay goldberg said he was almost 100% sure that michael cohen was going to flip and work with prosecutors. do you think that he's right? >> well, i think we have to understand there is a p presupposition that under that advice, that there is underlying criminal conduct or potential criminal conduct by donald trump as to which michael cohen could offer testimony. >> or even any evidence that there is real -- any crime that michael cohen himself has committed, which we don't have evidence of yet. >> but michael cohen won't flip on himself. we're talking about so much whether or not he's flipping on donald trump and -- >> okay. >> and to flip on donald trump presupposes which is something on which to flip. there is no evidentiary basis for that. so i would be, as a lawyer, quite cautious about assuming facts that we don't have any propo

gloria borger is back with new reporting. what are you learning now, gloria? >> we're learning that the search warrant was largely about stormy daniels. i was told that it has a number of requests, all of which are subsections of this big request, as it was described to me by a source with knowledge, that is, the payments to stormy daniels, communications with the president about this, and communications with the campaign about this. the warrant also includes some kind of smaller investment issues, that could be related or unrelated to the stormy daniels issue. my source was not sure, but interestingly enough, it does mention election laws. and we know that michael cohen took out this private lone and paid it on behalf of the president. i also know from sources who are close to the president, that they believe that they crossed a line. and you heard that in the president today, that this is his personal attorney. they believe they have been playing nice and cooperating with the special counsel and i think they now believe the special counsel has escalated this

michael zelldin and gloria borger.w reporting about conversations between mueller and the president's legal teams. what can you tell us? >> the "washington post" first reported this last night and my colleague evan perez and i have been doing some more reporting on this. it is correct that the president's team was told in march sometime when they were having conversations about whether the president was going to testify about special counsel, he was not a target of the investigation but he was more than a witness. what does that leave in between? that means that you're a subject, a subject can become a target as you know. and but in practical terms they were told he's unlikely to be considered a target because they believe that justice department guidelines did not allow for the indictment of a sitting president. there's been some controversy about that but -- and the belief by the president's team is that a straight shooter and i was told by one source that they believe mueller would only go after the president himsel

described by borger and others as a fixer. for the president. and my colleague jeff zeleny was reporting the president has been consumed by this. and he fix sates on every day. i will tell you i talked to a source familiar with this, these conversations that go on inside the white house about this. the source said earlier today that the legal team with the president at this point is not concerned that michael cohen is going to turn against the president and start singing like a canary. that at this point they expect cohen to to do what he has to do in the investigation. but he's not going to be a cooperating witness of some sort against the president. that is how they view things right now. they can't of course see into the future and know what's the unknown. but at this point they're trying to convey to the president hay don't think that should be a concern for him. of course the president from what we're told is very upset and furious that that probe has been launched and the raids took place. the question is at this point what happens in the

. >> let's bring in our senior political analyst and our chief political analyst gloria borger. what's your reaction, gloria, to these news that it's not really china's fault, it's the previous presidents' and trade negotiators' fault saying they did a bad job for the united states. >> i'm shocked he blamed his predecessors because he blames them for everything else. what was stunning to me was sort of his reaction about the farmers, which is saying, we'll take care of them eventually, they're great patriots, this isn't going to bother them. well, guess what? take one for the team. it is going to bother them. this is their lives. this is their livelihood. the president promised them a tax cut, maybe gave them a tax cut, and this will remove that and more. i think that the farmers are not going to be so sangui ne about this. >> he says they'll take a hit on soybeans or wheat or hogs, and we'll make it up to them. how do you make it up to them when they lose a ton of money in the meantime? >> you have to look at the stock market. markets are back up today, in part in anticipation

. >> let's go to gloria borger who has new information. >> cnn has learned tonight that when the fbi raided michael cohen's office, apartment and hotel room, they seized audio recording between cohen and keith davison. and as you know, he no longer represents either one of them. the recordings could prove really valuable to the government's investigation of cohen who is under scrutiny for his role in trying to keep these alleged affairs secret before the presidential election and the warrant for that search last week specifically mentioned these women. now cohen has admitted no wrongdoing and the president has denied any of these affairs. and i should add we do not know how many of these calls were recorded or what the conversation specifically contained but i can guarantee you they are going to be of a great deal of interest to law enforcement. >> let's talk about how it could be useful to investigators. getting e-mails is one thing but actual phone conversation, that is an extraordinary level of detail. >> they don't have to guess about who said what to whom when. the election, you

. >>> i want to get more perspective on something that gloria borger mentioned earlier, president trumpsident, sources tell cnn asked why other countries american allies have not stepped in and also complained about the cost. the president's demeanor described as testy. joining us now, is general hurtling. basically, a result of off the cuff remarks that started last week, what do you make of that? >> it didn't surprise me, in fact i read the article that is now posted regarding what was said in the room and we were talking about a little bit about that last night. national security advisers, people who spent a lot of time doing this kind of thing and soldiers and marines who spent a lot of time on the battlefield trying to persuade someone who hasn't had those experiences on impl implications of what a rapid pull out would mean. and then hearing sarah sanders saying the president wants to turn it over to security forces on the ground. there are none, that is why there is a civil war. so it shows that there is a lack of understanding. we presume that people we elect will have a common v

. >> let's talk a little more about that, because our gloria borger is reporting that the search warrant was related to stormy daniels, and search warrant was very broad in terms of items sought and the search included bank records. why do a raid like this instead of calling up michael cohen's attorney and saying, we need you to turn everything over? >> i think there is a false assumption that everything is handled, when you're talking about courts of law with gentlemen's agreements saying, why don't you fight this in a court of law? they may not be comprehensively giving you everything you need, so you have the right to get a search warrant, especially since there could be something fleetingly going away, like certain documents. don't confuse the two investigations. this was a referral by special counsel mueller handed over to an independent u.s. attorney who is of manhattan, somebody who was chosen by the president. the president actually had a hand of interviewing, much to the chagrin of many people, who replaced the people he fired just last year. the reason that's significant here i
