let's go to boris sanchez now. he has been covering this violent protest since it again about eight hours ago now. boris we have been keeping a close eye on the street corner where you are. it seems the riot please have been moving in to try to clear out the last of the dhon straightors? >> reporter:. that's right. we are looking at some of the last demonstrators. by my count, there is about nine of them across the street from us. as i'm saying that, several are leaving. a handful of them left a few moments ago and had choice words for the officers behind me brocking off this street. down there, you still can see riot police down this street. they push us off a short while ago asking us to get out of there. there were others on that street. i'm not sure where they are now. it's dying down not just in numbers, and also in intensity. it was truly a rough night for the city of charlotte. what dwan as a very dramatic emotional dialogue outside of a police station eventually evolved into ugliness and people being very k

because the majority of these people that come to protest are good people. >> boris sanchez is there.era. a small group of police seem to have a formed a circle or scare and standing by. >> reporter: they are standing by. the biggest part of the crowd has moved down the street to a local park. but there is where the encounter with police and protesters was most heated. they actually moved from the corner of the building into this area. partly because i think it was getting kind of dangerous. there were people on all sides of police and they were cornered now. there are still protesters behind me and across the streets as well. we don't know exactly where they are headed. this is i believe south of where the park is. the park is directly to our east. i don't know whether they are circling the block or they are doing this to get out of the way for now. but again, so far, a very heated argument, nothing violent yet. there were calls for the crowds to be dispersed. from loud speakers from police. some of the crowd did disperse but what i understand, that big circle of people that was bloc

boris sanchez, this is the fourth night of unrest since the shooting of keith lamont scott. last night was relatively peaceful. what's going on this evening? >> reporter: don, this tone of peacefulness continues tonight. we started close to the omni with about 100 people. it's grown considerably, definitely more than perhaps 200 people right now. and the chants have been continuous. the main one i keep hearing is "release the tapes." there's a lot of frustration in this crowd, especially because of the tape that was released today from rakeah scott. the tape she released showing the incident on camera causing a lot of confusion. i spoke to one mom who told me the tape had no answers for her, this only puts pressure on police to release their only videos of the incident. i can tell you we've been walking all over downtown charlotte last night, we walked about five miles with these protestsoers today. at one point we walked on highway 277 several miles downtown far away from here, and as we got down the highway, we're worried there could be danger. police had the highway shut

that's where cnn's boris sanchez is. boris, what are you seeing? >> reporter: hey, good morning, john. good news here in apalachicola is that the storm mostly veered east, so the damage here is minimal. i actually spoke to a police officer a few moments ago who said this is about as smooth as you get when you deal with a hurricane. very, very fortunate that not only was this not a direct hit but also it didn't seem to pack the punch that people were expected here. we saw a lot of businesses that were boarded up. they did not seem to sustain any damage, but the danger is still present exactly because of the reason you mentioned. it's still dark out. there could be dangers lurking in places many people may not expect. that's why officials are asking folks to stay home until they can scan for the ek tent of the damage. one obvious danger are puddles where power lines may have gone down and may still be live. people start walking around their home, trying to scan things to see the extent of the damage, and it could be potentially very dangerous. as you

that's where we find cnn's boris sanchez. what's the situation there, boris? >> reporter: hey, good morning, alisyn. a very different picture from where polo was a few miles east of here. when the hurricane made landfall at 1:30 a.m., packing winds up to 80 miles an hour t took out power to more than 100,000 people, but at least here in apalachico apalachicola, the damage appears to be minimal. i've spoken to several people in the area who say they haven't noticed much damage. one of them was a police officer. he told me this is about as smooth as it get when is you're dealing with a hurricane. there was a lot of concern about the storm surge. as you can see, we're in front of a coastal area right now. fortunately when the storm hit, it was low tide, so the water didn't flow into neighborhoods as it had before. fortunately, it appears the only damage is some debris in the streets. as the sun comes up, we'll get a clearer picture of how extensive the damage was. the headline here in apalachicola is people were ready. obviously a big concern for officials, as yo

boris sanchez is there, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, carol.s picking up considerably. we've already had several bands of torrential rain coming down. up to 20 inches of rain in some spots. we're expecting winds stronger than 70 miles an hour in some areas. it's really rare to get a direct hit of this kind in this area. the big bend area of the panhandle. a hurricane or storm would have to have a very steep curve in the gulf to come thisw way and avoid hitting any land before hitting this region. the governor saying it's critical for everyone who lives in this area to prepare for the storm. i spoke to a business owner. he told me about ten years ago there was a storm that directly hit the panhandle and that it brought up the water so high in the marina not far from here that boats actually ended up stranded in neighborhoods. we're not expecting that level of flooding necessarily for this area but it's certainly possible. that say business owner told me that he was planning to stay open the whole day. he said he had sandbags and other provisions

we have cnn's boris sanchez live along florida's gulf coast. hey are getting some window of warning right now, but this was a little bit of a tricky situation. kind of really got strong all of the sudden. >> reporter: yeah, chris. we didn't really know where this hurricane was going to go almost until the last minute. this is an area that typically doesn't get a lot of hurricanes because of where it's situated. you have to have a hurricane that makes a very steep curve to get a direct hit here in the panhandle. florida governor rick scott has declared a state of emergency, saying that everyone in this area has to be ready, they have to prepare for 11 to 20 inches of rain in some spots with winds stronger than 60 miles an hour. this is going to be a category 1 hurricane when it hits. i actually spoke to a business owner here last night who told me that about 11 years ago, the last time they got a direct hit in this area, the water in a nearby marina got so high that it sent several boats straight into this neighborhood. despite that, he says he's

cnn's boris sanchez in apalachicola, florida. boris. >> reporter: good morning, john. people here in apalachicola are waking up to good news. it appears that the damage here was minimal. this is really a case study in how unpredictable hurricanes can be. we were told that the storm was going to directly hit this area at about 1:00 a.m. yesterday. but at about 1:30 it hit several miles southeast of here, closer to where polo was. fortunately, though, there are several thousand people without power right now. in this area, it appears that the loss of electricity was minimal. there is some debris in the street but no trees or power lines appear to be down at this time. i actually spoke to a police officer this morning who was out on patrols and he said this was as smooth as you can get when it comes to dealing with a hurricane. i also just spoke with the mayor of apalachicola and he told me they were very fortunate to not get much damage. what is a welcome sign though is that people were prepared. we saw people boarding up their businesses and setting up sandbags. obvious
