boris sanchez is in daytona beach that has been getting hammered. big gusts of wind, lightning. he had tamove his shot to stay safe and let's check in with him right now. boris, the latest? >> just a few moments ago we got hit with another huge gust of wind. we had debris coming into the loop here in our hotel. a huge sheet of metal just swoop by us, fortunately, didn't hit anyone. yeah, the wind just keeps getting stronger and stronger and the rain is just going sideways at this point. chris, from what we can tell, the lights are still on at least down the street from us. but we have seen several power flashes and at one point we saw what appeared to be sparks coming off of a light post. so far so good. that's the message from the chief of police here in daytona beach. at least about two hours ago for the most part we've seen minimal damage. there is a lot of debris in the street, though. still a very dangerous situation, but at least so far it doesn't appear that there is tremendous amount of damage. obviously, all of that can change as the storm gets closer and closer, especia

let's head to daytona beach and boris sanchez.re the brunt of the storm may hit later tonight or early friday morning. good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning. yeah, things took a very grim turn here just a few moments ago. we got our first real taste of what's coming with hurricane matthew. some very harsh winds started pounding our crew and this beach when we were here yesterday that was full of people is now ominous. very gray outside, the surge is starting to be felt here as the waves creep closer and closer. as a matter of fact, just a few moments ago we were told we were going to have to evacuate our hotel. we are in volusia county where there are mandatory evacuations. as there are all along this coast, north of us in flagler county and south of us as well in st. louucie and brevard coun, about two million people are in the evacuation zone. it will be one of the largest mandatory evacuations, the largest since hurricane sandy in 2012 and the governor did not mince words when he spoke earlier. he said people will die be

so, let's begin our team coverage with boris sanchez live in daytona beach. what is the situation there, boris? >> hey, good morning, alisyn. the wind is starting to pick up. it gets stronger and stronger as we see the storm surge nearing the coast of florida. it is picking up water and sand and bringing it in to where we're standing right now. evacuation orders all along the coast. about 2 million people have orders to evacuate. the largest mandatory evacuation since hurricane sandy back in 2012. as we've been driving around town, we've been seeing businesses that are boarded up. our hotel is boarded up right now and sandbags outside. i spoke to a gentleman who moved here from cleveland three days ago and he's heeding the warning and about to take off from the path of the storm. like him, so many trying to get out of the way of the powerful storm. 1,500 national guard forces have been deployed to help people get out of here. as you can imagine, more than 25 counties have shut down their operations for the day. schools are closed all across the state. the idea

in fact, boris sanchez, our reporter there, the roof just came down on you, boris? >> reporter: not exactly, carol. it was part of the roof. a glass window that was kind of like a sunroof over us just shattered, fortunately we were inside. hotel management got us out of there just moments before. let me set the scene. we were doing our live shot under this awning where there's a loop in front of the hotel, and as we were standing there, i walked out to try to get some video of the street in a moment where things looked pretty calm. actually, i may have to move for a second because management is having us out of the way of the windows here. as we were standing, i got a quick video of the street and i walked back and just a moment later we started hearing this banging over us on the awning and out of nowhere there was a loud crash, huge bang. we looked over and what looked like, i can't make out exactly what it is, it's a giant chunk of metal just came down in front of us, about 20 feet in front of us. several of us started moving toward the inside of the hotel and th

boris sanchez is in daytona beach, florida. where is hurricane matthew located right now? where is it headed? when will florida, for example, experience the worst of this hurricane? >> it has just left nassau, headed towards freeport in the bahamas. eventually making a run at florida and the governor said best case scenario, worst case scenario. best case scenario is the storm turns and stays in the water. worst case, it stays straight and heads right on to the shore. right on to the shore of the northern side of maybe coco beach, somewhere there around cape canaveral, as a 140 to possibly 145 mile per hour storm. the storm had a little trouble overnight because of the higher elevations of cuba, giving it some dry air. the farther it moves from cuba, the less influence cube has on the storm, so that's why it's strengthening right now, plus very warm water. it's in the gulf stream. the water that comes out of the gulf of mexico, goes around the florida keys and then on up to the northeast coast. that's why the water in the carolinas is so warm, because it's really out of th

boris sanchez is in daytona beach. he has had to move several times this morning because of the wind effect. how is it now? >> chris, we're going to have to move again soon. we've started to have to dodge debris that's coming in from the street here. this is a piece of roofing insulation that almost hit our camera guy just a few moments ago. it's just a mess out here. the wind continues to just pound this area. i'm sure some of these palm trees are going to start falling over at some point. i've seen them bend pretty far. you can see behind us there are still people driving through this. i can't imagine why. the dangers in these kinds of hur kans are numerous. you not only have extremely strong winds but you have the debris that they throw around. power lines that get knocked down. you also have extreme flooding. we're at the shore here. the ocean is just on the other side of our hotel and with the storm surge in this area supposed to be higher than seven feet you can expect flooding in these neighborhoods, and you pai
