boris sanchez is our correspondent there near where the shooting had taken place. boris what have you learned since we last talked? >> reporter: brooke, it is still a fluid situation. we have not been able to get -- speak to us here on the ground, but they appear to be done with the sweep of the parking garage we were just showing you across from the runway. but as you look forward the runway you can see the evacuations are still underway, there are hundreds of people walking across the tarmac and other to hangars on the other side and still people on the lower level huddled together. moments ago there was a family i saw laying on the ground. still very frightened by what they had seen. a few moments ago there were screaming and officers with very large weapons. we didn't know what was going on, things appear to have calmed down since then. there were reports of another unconfirmed shooting. it's unclear whether that was as a result of people panicking and running when they saw these officers being mobilized. but it was chaos, people running in all different directi

boris sanchez is our correspondent who is there talking to us from the airport. boris i hear you have a passenger? >> reporter: yeah, we spoke with her moments ago, lori, you landed here about 15 minutes after the reports came in of shots being fired in the terminal behind us how did you find out this happen. >> we came down to the baggage terminal and we noticed it up on the screen on the television, we understand it was in terminal 2, we were in terminal 1. >> how did you feel about that. >> we were not prepared when something happens like that and i started getting phone calls from family members. from that point we got your bags and couldn't get a taxi, and we were only here about ten minutes and pandemonium hit again and so it was quite scary. >> reporter: do you know what was going on? >> my understanding was that they were apprehending another person and reports that there were shots fired. >> reporter: we have reports that those were unconfirmed reports of additional shots fired. >> they had everybody cleared off over by the main doors and cops there enter

lauderdale, i want to get to boris sanchez. boris, what are you hearing? >> reporter: pam, yeah, the details about the shooter, esteban santiago, are coming in perhaps most glaring what you heard from his family. his personality changed when he returned from serving overseas. aside from the shooter, we are learning more about those affected by the shooting. those killed and those still trier trying to recover. operations returning to normal at ft. lauderdale-hollywood international airport. in the aftermath of the gunman opening fire at the bag claim area and killing five and wounding six. olga walter was a great grandmother from florida. she flew in with her husband. terry andrews was a ship worker from virginia. celebrating his 63rd birthday with his wife. of the six rushed to the medical center, two needed emergency surgery. >> you cannot imagine what they are going through right now. you know, not waking up and lose a loved one. >> reporter: following the interview with the suspected gunman, esteban santiago, investigators revealed that the 26-year-old

boris sanchez with more on this video. boris, what more can you add to the images?> reporter: yeah, as you said, it is difficult to watch. right now, we don't know where tmz got this video. it does corroborate a lot of what we heard from officials as to how the attack played out. some of the things that stand out is you see people just casually walking. there's nothing really that stands out about esteban santiago specifically as he's moving around. he's nondescript, until the moment he reaches in his waistband. one thing that stood out to me, is the moments before you see him walking in the frame, there's children walking right in front of him. from one moment to the next, the expression on his face seemingly opportunity change. he then pulls out the weapon and starts shooting the team nearest to him. again, with a blank stare on his face. at one point, he seemsly crouches and starts running. and you see people, as you said, fred, start to go to the ground. people are crouching behind baggage carts and finding any way they can to hide from this man. we don't know h

cnn's boris sanchez joining me now. is the airport confirming this is their surveillance video? >> reporter: hey, fred. we just spoke to a spokesman for the ft. lauderdale/hollywood international airport. who would not comment how this video was leaked. except to say, there is an investigation. and law enforcement is involved. as you said, fred, it is tough to watch. in the video, the seconds before the shooter walks on the screen, you see there's some young children walking around in front of him. there's people picking up their bags and getting ready to exit the airport. that's when he walks into frame. what stands out, is he so totally nondescript. there's nothing that stands out about him until that moment when you see him reach into his waistband. he takes out the 9 millimeter pistol. and what is telling, is the expression on his face doesn't change. he is expression less, as he opens fire on the people to him. a lot of people go to the ground. one woman get behind a baggage cart trying to hide. he somewhat crouches. and then, he starts running away. wear not sure how this

boris sanchez is live just outside. boris, what are you seeing in the last few minutes from your vantage point there? >> jim, we're just waiting for a press briefing from the governor of florida, rick scott, set to start in about ten minutes or so. we've seen several helicopters circling overhead. broward county sheriff's and others. as we heard from the sheriff of broward county, about an hour or so ago, this is still a fluid scene. it does seem, obviously, like it's way more under control than it was just a few hours ago. they just put up that yellow tape. we're seeing a very large law enforcement presence from all over the southeast part of florida here. the difficulty now is in canvassing all the passengers and people that are still here on the scene. there are several hundred people that can't go anywhere because the airport is shut down. and as you can see behind me this is terminal 2, this is where the shooting took place on the lower level in the baggage claim area. this is an air canada and delta terminal. and

or boris sanchez now has more on what happened. >> reporter: just before 1:00 p.m.an opens fire at ft. lauderdale international airport. chaos inside terminal two, at least 13 people shot, with multiple casualties. the cell phone video shows people lying on the floor in the baggage claim area. the panic inside the terminal then spills outside, as hundreds run from the fun shots, flooding onto the tarmac and out onto the runways. the injured quickly evacuated to a nearby hospital. >> everybody started running out of terminal one, out of the rental car place, some lady was yelling for help in the garage, so i just ran. >> reporter: cnn has learned the suspected shooter left alaska earlier today, bound for ft. lauderdale. he declared a firearm when boarding. that weapon packed inside his luggage. and on arrival, after retrieving his bag, one source tells cnn he went into a bathroom and came out firing. long after the shooting, hundreds continued to run through open areas around the airport. some driven by false reports of additional shootings. >> the shooter in custody

cnn's boris sanchez is live outside that event. what can you tell us, boris? >> reporter: good morning, carol. we're set to hear from representative lewis later today. he was set for press availability this morning, but the congressman is running late. he's said to be the keynote speaker at an event in miami for the 5,000 role models of excellence project, a project that brings together young african-american men and mentors from the community. the response here, as you can imagine, has not been one welcoming of donald trump's criticism of representative lewis in large part because of the timing of this. you'll note representative lewis has an extensive civil rights resume, of course walking and marching with dr. martin luther king many years ago and leading the march from selma, montgomery in 1965 where he had a confrontation with police and had his skull fractured. among democrats, the response has been harsh to say the least. at last count, 26 expecting to skip the inauguration. we're hearing from republicans critical of donald trump. we heard from senator

boris sanchez was there. he is now at federal court -- or an airport, it looks like.t did the suspect say? >> reporter: he didn't say much, brooke. he walked into court wearing a red jumpsuit, looked around and mostly after he sat at the defense table kept his head bowed. he real edidn't say much during the whole proceeding this morning. the federal judge asked him if he understood his rights, if he could remain silent throughout the proceedings. he said he understood. then the three charges were read against him. she asked if he understand that. then he said yes. then they moved into the process of appointing him an attorney. he asked for a court appointed attorney. she asked him a series of questions about his finances. most importantly we learned he was last employed in november working as a security officer. before that he mentioned that he was enlisted in the military, serving in the army for almost ten years. one interesting note that she asked him was how much money do you have in your possession? do you have any assets? he said no and said he only had 5 to $10

first our boris sanchez has been reporting outside the airport and joins me now. a horrific day at ft. lauderdale. what's the latest tonight? >> reporter: we're watching passengers finally being allowed to leave. there are dozens of them now being loaded onto these buses you see here just to the left. so finally they're being allowed to go home after several hours of being stuck inside that terminal with hundreds of heavily armed law enforcement present and all around canva canvassing the scene. we are learning more about the shooter. a few moments ago we got confirmation that in the past the shooter had purchased two glock pistols, one of them a glock 9, the other a glock 40, though it's unclear if those were the weapons he used in this attack. apparently he had been on a flight from alaska to ft. lauderdale. one witness told cnn that they had some kind of an altercation on the flight. the shooter had an altercation on the flight. once they landed he retrieved his baggage. he went to a restroom, took out the weapon and opened fire, wreaking havoc on ft. lauderdal

>> boris sanchez on the scene, we'll get back to you. we'll await that news conference by the governor. ours justice correspondent evan perez has been working his sources and has new information about the suspect. what are you learning, evan? >> wolf, a couple months ago we're told that the suspect showed up at the fbi office in anchorage, alaska, apparently the last place that authorities have for him, the last place that he lived. he was exhibiting what we're told signs of mental illness and he apparently was committed to a mental institution for treatment. and this, again, happens just a couple months ago before -- this is the most recent significant interaction that law enforcement has had with him. there you see a picture of him that we've obtained. this shows the suspect esteban santiago. according to the authorities that we've been talking to, that is the most significant interaction that they have on record with this suspect. there's no major arrest in his record. he did not show up on any radar as perhaps somebody who has any ki

. >> cnn's boris sanchez at the ft. lauderdale airport. i understand you have new information about a visit the suspect made to the fbi before the shooting, is that right? >> reporter: yes, we learned they made contact in anchorage, back in november and we learned in the past few hours, sources telling cnn apparently visited the office with a weapon. apparently, the same weapon that he used in yesterday's attack here at fort lauderdale hollywood international airport. i asked with the spokesperson of the fbi yesterday if there was any attempt made to perhaps confiscate that weapon. after all, when he approached the office of the fbi, he told agents he was wearing voices and that those voices were telling him to watch isis videos. he told me he couldn't answer the question at that point and learning more about the shooter's personal life in an altercation he apparently had with his girlfriend back in january of 2016. she alleges that he strangled her and smacked her on the side of the head. he pled not guilty to charges of assault and crimi

boris sanchez is in ft. lauderdale. dan first to you, what did we learn from the press conference? >> well it seems like law enforcement is taking a defensive posture here. saying that they acted appropriately. just a few minutes ago. we heard from the head of the fbi office, here in anchorage, as well as the chief of the ampgampg anchorage police department. we heard that the fbi office had encounters with the suspect either for a domestic disturbance case or a physical disturbance case, each time the suspect was let go. they had nothing to bring him into custody with. we know when the suspect came to the fbi field office, he came in by himself. apparently at the urging of associates and friends, said he was hearing voices and this is what authorities said just a short time ago with respect to that. take a look. >> in november 2016, mr. santiago walked into the anchorage fbi office to report that his mind was being controlled by u.s. jeintelligen agency, during the interview mr. santiago appeared agitated, incoherent and made disjointed statements. apd was contacted by the anchora

today, joining me now, cnn's boris sanchez, rene marsh, our aviation correspondent, and deborah feyerick, in union city, new jersey, at the home of the suspect's aunt, she has some news on that. boris, let's get to you, where it happened. the fbi holding a news conference tonight. what did they say? >> reporter: don, they said that this would be a difficult and extensive investigation, an expansive one, at that. you can imagine how many people were here at ft. lauderdale hollywood international airport, when all of this unfolded. another thing that they said at the press briefing is that they would explore all avenues to figure out a motive behind this attack. they said they were investigating in several states, including, as you mentioned, new jersey and alaska. one of the things we heard from the fbi during this press briefing, we were able to confirm that the shooter at one point had visited an office of the fbi in anchorage back in november and revealed to them that he was hearing voices that he believed came from national intelligence agencies here in the united states that were tel

. >> cnn's boris sanchez has more for you. good morning. >> good morning, carol.mportant to point out this is being investigated as an accident. we just heard from the amarillo fire department and the father of the family of ten got his hands on some aluminum phosphide, a very strong pesticide from a friend. and he apparently applied it to the bottom of the home. we're not sure why but at one point he decided to wash it off and that -- that's what ultimately triggered a chemical reaction that forced paramedics to his home at about 5:00 a.m. yesterday. when they got there one of his ate children was unresponsive. the paramedics tried to administer cpr but the child was dead at the scene. nine people had to be rushed to the hospital. four of the children ultimately passed away. five people are now being treated for exposure to this hazardous chemical that as it turns out is not meant for residential use at all. it's actually meant to be used on wider areas. here's one expert on pesticides discussing it. >> when we use it, we can't use it within 100 foot of a structu

and boris sanchez is at the ft. lauderdale airport. so dan, there are brand new details that we just heard from shimon, suggesting this was a premeditated attack. well that's exactly right, pamela and hopefully that when the news conference begins here at the anchorage police department in about 30 minutes from now, some of those questions will be addressed. we're told that it will begin promptly at the bottom of the hour. as we have been reporting now, that you know, santiago came to the fbi with a weapon. actually. and it was ultimately given to the local police department, and then given back to him following his mental health evaluation that lasted about 72 hours. think some of the questions that will come about during the press conference and hopefully the authorities will answer them, were all of the procedures followed? did they miss something here? also, can they trace what santiago's whereabouts in the days leading up to this attack. those are some of the questions that are unanswered and hopefully they'll be able to shed ligh
