he was born into slavery. in addition to knowing very little about the day he was born, he knew very little about the woman who gave birth to him because he was separated from his mother at an early age. the wife of one of his masters started teaching him to read, but stopped when her husband disapproved. he therefore had to teach himself how to read. he escaped slavery at the age of 20. he was working in a baltimore shipyard at the time, and disguised himself as a sailor to escape.
