let's get to the blizzard-like conditions in boston. where more than a foot of snow and frigid temperatures are causing havoc. our richard lui is in the thick of all of it. and joins us now live. good morning, richard. >> good morning, to you, betty. as bill was talking about, those high gusting winds, reports of areas south of boston, up to 55 miles per hour. what we're seeing around here is about 20-25 miles per hour. and when we check our little thermometers here at the site, it's about 3 or 4 degrees, but you've got to deduct 20 degrees from that. when the wind chill hits us, well below zero. so the kind of snow we're seeing is very light. and you can tell when you look at just some of the plowed snow, it's fluffy, it's like that. beautiful champagne powder that you get when you're in states such as colorado. and what they've been doing all night is keeping the plows working. over 3,300 of them working at midnight at that time, according to the massachusetts department of transportation. and that's why they've been able to keep the

boston logan airport. all of the airports remain open but not a lot of flights coming and going. at boston airport, they are hoping for flights to resume there at around noon today. the big issue is the visibility. so we are seeing about 5 inches of snow but the problem is the wind is picking up the snow and it's a light fluffy snow. the port authority saying here in new york that they are ready for the storm and they are deploying more than 200 pieces of equipment to deal with the snow and the ice but, again, there is really nothing that can be done about the visibility until the conditions calm down at around 10:00 a.m. eastern time. interesting to note. if you look behind me here, there is not a lot of activity behind mere. i think a lot of people checked with their airlines and found out their flights were cancelled. that is the key here. check with your airline. back to you. >> absolutely true. check with your airlines. so many of you nous can get text alerts and stuff before we leave for the airport

this is the finishing line pretty much of the boston marathon over there. so you can tell exactly where we are. and look at the place. there is hardly really anybody here. there is more traffic than there was earlier, that is true, but i'm afraid there is an awful lot of snow on the ground and the number of snowplows and people working to clear this stuff really outnumbering the people who are here. so although the snow has stopped in boston and the sun is out, the snow is going to be falling for many hours south of here. and particularly down in the island, there the forecast is for it to snow until 2:00 or 3:00. and the snow storm right now, which is really the last event of this storm, they are wiorrie that that surge might cause flooding. and we have been listening to one of the people that run the airport, and he has said the tarmac and runways are clear, and it looks like an airport in florida according to him. of course the temperature isn't conducive of that. however, they are waiting for the aircraft to come back in. the airlines keep their aircraf

it's not even as bad in boston as it is in cape cod southeast of boston. the conditions can even worse. laurie segall is there. the winds and snowfall really, really tough where you are. that might not be the biggest concern. it's the coastal flooding that people have been worried about. have those fears been realized? >> listen, i just got off the phone with the massachusetts emergency office and i said, right now is high tide. this is the time that folks are worried. it's going to cause coastal flooding. this town, we're here in chatham, massachusetts, this town is so near the water. anytime something like this happens, could you have coastal flooding. the good news is right now it's high tide. it's moderate right now. they haven't seenen too much coastal flooding. they've seen a little bit in plymouth but right now saying it's minimum. i will tell you this because i've been standing here from different hours. and it's a lot better now than it is this morning. we're standing on main street. if you look behind me, all the stores are closed but finally peo

by 8:00 p.m., a shield of snow from boston back up to d.c. it will wrap up thursday night into friday morning. the worst of the conditions from boston down to new york and perhaps down toward the jersey shore as well. by the time we head to friday morning it starts to wrap up and by friday afternoon/evening the snow works its way off to the coast. snow totals by the time we get to the late thursday hours, 3 to 6 inches in parts of central ohio. 6 to 12 inches in new york state. as it wraps up we could see a foot or so more in boston, half a foot in new york. near blizzard conditions possible near the coast, boston, cape code, and down toward new york and long island and subzero windchills. the cold a big part of this. when we wake up saturday morning, look at some of the temperatures. almost all of the northeast goes below zero. i'm meteorologist eric fisher of cbs news. >>> minneapolis officials say they don't know what started an apartment fire and killed 14 people. the fire started yesterday morning and quickly burned through the three-sto

but north and west of boston, it's over. new york city, philadelphia, washington, d.c., and down towards norfolk it's over. believe it or not, around norfolk, virginia, we had about 4 inches of snow. that's crazy. now, here in the northeast, the winds are starting to ramp up near the coast as the storm intensifies. these are recent wind gusts anywhere from 20 to 40 miles an hour. so, when you combine that with some pretty chilly arctic air, well, we're looking at some low realfeel temperatures. currently in boston, it's 11. new york is 12 and d.c., 13. so that snow has been light and fluffy, so if you like to make snowball, it's kind of hard to do that. you'll certainly have to bundle up for the morning hours. it's cold out there. look at those realfeel temperatures, well below zero. and guess what, it does look like this cold pattern will continue for awhile, so the storm pulls out. brisk winds, especially near the coast, there will be blowing, drifting snow, and that will make it hard to keep those roadways clear. now back
