didn't boston usually import molasses to make rum. the history of molasses in boston is kind of a storied history. that is in the book as well. some stuff i leave out of the presentation but if it comes up, i am happy to answer it. the flood basically end 300 years of molasses industry in boston. there is some molasses distilling that takes place up into the second world war. but molasses was used in colonial times as a sugar substitute in gingerbread and baked beans. for example, there is an example of thanksgiving, a town in connecticut, post posting thanksgiving because there wasn't enough molasses on hand. molasses is a critical part of the slave trade in boston, where we ship bostonians and new englanders, shipped rum to the west coast of africa. and they in turn sent slaves to the west indies and molasses was shipped up to boston and the process began again. there is a quote from john adams in the book after he leaves the presidency, and i'm paraphrasing here, he says, i know not why we blush to confess that molasses was an esse
