there's ah the boston massacre took place. and so for those bostonians who thought that they knew what it meant to be a bostonian, what it what it meant to be an american about freedom, this had this had the impact, i think, of waking them up in a way that, um, that a pamphlet or a book or a congressional action passed 500 miles away in d.c. it didn't have because it was bringing the injustice of enslavement right to them. and it made them feel, i think in some sense, that they were they were participants in this particular travesty. and this is also 1854. we're talking about a year of change. and and it's also the year that, you know, abraham lincoln kind of reappears and really begins to take a national role. in fact, you write that in it in its considerable commotion, meaning 1854, if you benefit from chaos, from the chaos quite like lincoln, you tell talk about that and what he was doing at this point. lincoln was a one term congressman and his term was that a few years earlier and so he's in springfield. he's practicing l

he was rushed back to boston for surgery. now, as it happens, as his deputy at the time, i was minding my own business, it was a sunday, and i got a call from john feiner who said to me, what are you doing tonight? i said, nothing much, getting ready for work tomorrow. he said, can you get on a plane to paris? so i did, to take the secretary's place an important counter-isis conference that was taking place. but here's what happened. normal people would take weeks to recover. not john. within hours of the operation, he was holding -- he beamed into the conference in paris, he refused pain medication, not wanting to lose one iota of his mental sharpness and just days later, back in geneva. in a particularly tense moment, john's counterpart abruptly stood up from the table and made his way to the door. john took his crutch, jutted it out and blocked his exit.
