the headquarters of the boston marathon is now on lockdown. it occurred just seconds before 3:00 this afternoon. it's my belief. and then we began getting the first pictures and reports out of boston at about seven or eight minutes after 3:00. again, 3:00 here on the east coast. some of the initial chaos seems to have calmed. in the early going you saw from the early video people were working very rapidly to try to get people away from an area. there were barricades set up. if we can go back to that video that might help there had been barricades set up for the finish line, it's my underring, the kind that authorities put out whenever there's a big event. they were moving those to try to get to what appeared to be people who were injured. whether they were able to accomplish that or not is not matter. and people stood in stunned disbelief. on the left-hand side of the screen we're seeing live images from the fox station in boston and on the right-hand side of the screen some video from the early going. you can see wheelchairs in there. there is

guilty verdict in a peeping >> joining us now with more information on the investigation into the boston marathon bombing, senior cbs correspondent. we know for a fact the boston story is a big thing, but tonight we got word there is an envelope that tested positive for ricin on capitol hill. wondering what your sources may be telling you about that. >> all right. this is an envelope that came in addressed to a senator. it came into the mail center, which as you know is not located at the capital since the anthrax event, all mail is handled off site. the system worked the way it was supposed to. it was identified as suspicious. they did a field test that tested positive for ricin and did a second field test that confirmed that. those field tests are really indicators more than positive evidence. so what they've done is it's been turned over to the fbi in baltimore. that's going to go to a laboratory where they're going to really grow it out in a sample and if in fact it is ricin. so really it will be a couple of days before we know. what we do know is we have a suspicious letter with an unknown s

a third bomb was found in the vicinity of the boston marathon route. and it was defused by the boston police. now, there was a third explosion at the john f. kennedy library at the same time, but now we are being told that was not a bomb. the police news conference that was held a while ago suggested that there was a bomb at the j.f.k. library. we are being told now that there was a fire in a mechanical room at the library, just happened to be at the same time that these bombs went off, and we are told by the folks at the j.f.k. library that no one was injured there. but we coknow fro co-- do know from the boston police, at least two people have been killed. that number will likely grow as we learn more. and at least 50 people are in various emergency rooms in boston. many of them are in critical condition. most of them have survivable injuries. a great deal of trauma, broken bones, bleeding a major concern. these pictures were shot about two and a half hours ago, immediately after the bombing, but we are told now the scene is completely cleared. the en

boston marathon. st joining us, there to the -- actually, the upper -- the crepter of your picture now, you see the white kind of powder burn from post explosion. you see the medical detritus. sadly what we believe is human blood on the sidewalk right there before the finish line of the boston marathon. this picture was one of the first to circulate on twitter this afternoon. one of the first ways we knew this had happened. and in the background you see a column of white smoke. in the foreground you see an orange flash. when we first saw this coupled with reports that there were two explosions, it appeared to us that the foreground orange flash was the second. the secondary explosion. the smoke already having risen in the background from the first one. and, again, you have runners going by. this was a photo taken by someone in the crowd. someone on the sidewalk. and immediately posted on social media. but it shows the initial orange flash. so think of the spectators in the foreground on the other side

you're at the finish line of a boston marathon. a bomb goes off, you might think 20, 30, 50 casualties. that didn't happen. what does that tell you? >> well, it may indicate that there was only a small number of individuals involved, that there was a lower level attack, but we have to evaluate the facts and information that comes out from local law enforcement and federal agencies as well. >> talk to us about what's going on behind the scenes now. when you have a crime scene this large and the police are talking about how if they see any sort of parcel or bag along the side of this route, they may blow it up because they have to treat everything as a suspicious thing. how massive an undertaking is this? >> it's a significant undertaking. the federal agencies, the fbi, is the lead agency currently. they mobilize all their agents at the command posts in situations like that working with the local investigators and detectives on the scene, the bomb technicians as well to try to evaluate the forensic aspect of this investigation, linki

is this the moment that the second suspect in the boston marathon bombing has been captured? we do not know yet. police radio frequencies a moment ago described someone in custody at this scene. there was a cheer that went up from the crowd. but we do not have confirmation that the man who is? custody, the man who was seen around the boat, is in fact 19-year-old dzhokar tsarnaev, the last remaining suspect in the boston marathon bombings. his brother, as you may know, was killed last night when the two brothers were involved in a ferocious nooir fight with police officers. bombs were thrown. 200 rounds of ammunition was fired in that firefight. his older brother, 26-year-old tamerlan tsarnaev, was killed. a police officer was gravely wounded, and the search has been on for the 19-year-old younger brother ever since. boston police, apparently, have tweeted, "suspect in custody. custody." we want to be very careful about this. it's a tweet that we understand came from the boston p.d., "suspect in custody." it is the same thing that we have heard on the police scann scanner. the
