they are in new york, boston and washington d.c.. the university is very important here. our students don't know the story. some of us teach african-americans history and we teach sort courses on social movements and social justice. one thing i find really remarkable is that many people have never taken a civil rights course and never taken a black history course before they enter a college campus whether they are white or black so our students need to know the story. why does martin luther king and representative clyburn matter? why did ferguson happen? they need to understand everything from slavery to a movement to citizenship and voting rights in this country and we can do that by organizing on our campuses, tea tins. we have teach ends against the vietnam war in the 1960s. we can do tea tins for racial and economic equality. we can do a lot in the key and this is education but also dialogue. black and white people are not speaking to each other. we need to have a dialogue with each other that's not about recrimination or accusation but rooted in reality and where we

university take advantage of your proximity to federal government, the agencies here? >> well, washington has the second highest number of college students or college-aged students after boston. it's an incredible opportunity in terms of cultural opportunities n terms of interships for the students in federal agencies and for the faculty in terms of verj, we partner with federal agencies, with federal labs. we're surrounded by intelligence and military establishments. so we do joint research. we have contracts with them. so, the opportunities are immense and i think the university of maryland would not be the institution it is if it were not 8 miles from the heart of the nation's capital. >> you have federal grants and contracts worth 310 million at the university of maryland. what type of contracts do you have with the federal government? >> well, it's actually 500 million and it's in all sorts of areas. for example, with nasa goddard, we are engaged with them unmanned space flight. with the cybersecurity with homeland security and intelligence agencies we are extremely strong in cybersecurity and just got a huge grant from nist. we're working on global climate change. noah
