even if it's frequently dismissed as the botox company as if it's some sort of, in truth allergan has built amazing franchises in eye care, migraine headaches, incontinence, even sweat glands, by spending a huge amount of its revenue, you have to 16% on research, far more than all of the old-line pharmas, and much more like a biotech. allergan is known as a research machine. that's not the only reason i like this company. do you know when it was trading as almost half of its current price, piatt came on the show and made an impassioned plea like you to buy the stock. it wasn't self-promotion. he made his peace, his plea, because a bunch of analysts had questioned whether there would be a challenge to a key eye care drug. the analyst committee had almost completely turned against him, but i told you to go all in, which would have doubled if you bought it back then. i think it took serious courage and guts for him to come on and say that so many analysts were dead wrong about his company and told you not to worry about the patent problem, even as the deck seemed totally stacked against

maker, or more accurately his funds stake in the botox maker.he do it? dominic chu is here to break down what is a fascinating sequence to events, dom. >> a great story. a fund partnerses with a pharmaceutical giant. now, the unlikely pairing kicked off in february of this year, ackman and valeant's kreismt on the michael pearson struck a pact. now, the buying of that stock started on february 25th. what you're seeing here is a chart of the stock price behind me. it started off with 174,000 shares that they bought, another 422,000 shares just the next day. it worked out to be around $76 million in terms of allergan shares in the two days. the team switches up the strategy and call options among other things. remember, now, call options are simply contracts that allow you the right but not obligation to buy those shares at a certain price in the future. now, by april 10th here, the duo built up a stake in allergan. the next day they controlled over 5%, and this is important, because it meant that ackman had to tell regulators that he had a stake

investor bill ackman has partnered with valeant pharmaceuticals, a canadian company to make a bid for botox maker allergan. the deal values that company at 45 billion dollars or 153 dollars a share. stocks soared on details of the bid, with allergan up 21 dollars, and valent shooting up 9.why has the deal has captivated investors? here's damien conover of morningstar.
