a our recent visit to boulder, colorado. >> when visitors come to the boulder history museum, they will learn the early history of the boulder area. our focus is telling the stories of boulder from the early years up through today. the first floor is the exhibit of the arapahoe, the native americans who lived here prior to white settlement. this exhibit really tells that story. on the second floor of the museum, it is called "storymakers." it is about the early settlers to the boulder area, why they came here, how they made a living, and what life was like in the early years of boulder. the chief was one of our most notable historic figures in boulder's history. chief niwot was an arapahoe chief who was here in the mid-1850's at the time when gold was discovered and there was a lot of movement to the west, a lot of whites came out in search of gold and really changed the life of the indians who had been living here. niwot was an interesting man. he spoke english, which he learned from his sister's husband, who was a fur trader. that ended up being important to the arapahoe at the time.

and weekend on c-span 2 c-span 3, we focus on boulder, colorado, as we continue our cities tour. here is a portion. we are always asked what exactly is the chautauqua. a chautauqua is a retreat, generally in a beautiful place, ichment, enlightenment, entertainment, and coming together. it started in far western new york on lake chautauqua. thatement grew out of place and that time and really spread across the country, coming to boulder in 1898. interestingly, the texas board of higher education came to colorado looking for a place to establish a summer mountain .etreat for teacher training they found a willing participant in the city of boulder and boulder residents, who already had established the university theolorado here and loved idea of bringing more intellectual stimulation and entertainment to the community. so, interesting public-private partnership of the city, this group from texas, and a railroad that would transport, at the time, texans between texas and boulder, colorado. it was very much intended to serve the local community. that was part of a quid pro quo. locals

that is boulder, colorado. part of what i'm trying to get across in my book is the artificiality of the american landscape and of this wednesday. it is a beautiful seemingly natural place but it has been altered by humankind. when you get this wild animal coming into this landscape, you can cause changes in the behavior of the animal and that is what we saw is a change in online behavior is the mountain lions adapted to this human creative landscape. the period that i write about in my book is from the late '80s through the early '90s and that was a special time in the history of mountain lions. until that time, there were no lines in this area. historically they were here. but back in the late 1800s and the early 19 hundreds, there was a plan to exterminate them and they were found in very small numbers, but not so much in the boulder area. then they came back into an eco-conscious animal loving community and people were thrilled to see these large, beautiful cat come near this beautiful open space. whereas 15

this is a beautiful shot jack frost big boulder. we have moved the camera. does this say poconos or what? it is just a gorgeous shot up there today and if you are heading to the poconos or any other location today you will be so glad you are outside enjoying nature because it will be beautiful today. these leaves, the few to are, you can see it blowing around right now. they will be blowing a lot. this is kind of a spooky looking picture as these leaves change color and they will be probably a peak up the the poconos but boy, it is just beautiful this morning. 60 degrees is the temperature we are finding at the present time at the airport in philadelphia there is nothing scar bye that number. we have 46 degrees up in the poconos presently 567893 allentown. fifty-two millville. fifty-nine in wildwood. temperatures are mile. they won't be as mild tomorrow morning. we will find temperatures 42 degrees here in philadelphia a. but, this should look the same tomorrow morning when katie fehlinger is here with just not much going on, on storm scan three. i love this
