we're going after our industry strategy for box, financial services, box for health care box for retails. you're going to continue to see us working for larger and larger enterprises like general electric, like mason and many of the recent customer wins that we've announced. that growth is going to continue and our focus right now is on the top line metrics and more conversions to break even. >> and clearly to get companies like that on board, you've got to have sales and marketing but analysts have long faulted you for the amount you spend on sales and marketing. as one analyst -- as another analyst said crazy high. yes, you're bringing it down but it's still, the last i heard, about 88 cents to the dollar. i mean are you still working on bringing that down or are you comfortable spending that much at this time in the life of box? >> well if you look at each quarter last year we actually brought it down by a meaningful percentage of the total revenue. you will continue to see that trend. at the same time we are going after a very significant market as was mentioned, it's a tens and bill

at box headquarters in california, 11:00 a.m. on wall street, "squawk alley" is live. ♪ ♪ >> good thursday morning. welcome to "squawk alley." henry blodget, founder, editor and ceo at business insider joins us this morning. jon fortt and kayla tausche. here at post nine. market is interesting. dow up 176, best day since early february, box, shares of the cloud storage company sliding after the bell when the quarterly results did disappoint. ceo aaron levy took out his frustration on the analysts saying they got the numbers wrong. josh lipton in san jose this morning to sort this out. hey, josh. >> well, carl, aaron levie came out swinging on the earnings call and when i spoke to him last night he told me analysts just got it wrong. box posted a q4 loss of 1.65 on what appear to be the consensus view of a loss of 1.17, but levi says the 1.17 number was wrong because some analysts had set expectations based on the wrong share count and tweeted as much after the call last night. the real consensus estimate, says levlevi, was a loss

, but not the black box itself. we saw a press conference from the company's ceo. they could not figure out why a plane with two experienced pilots dropped in altitude without saying anything to the control tower, without answering the calls from the control tower and just crashed into the mountain nearby here. >> from what you're hearing, what is the theory for why the plane went down? >> reporter: there are a number of theories. because the pilots did not communicate, did not call out for help did not sent out distress calls or may-days and did not answer to calls from the control tower, the theory is they were incapacitated. lack of oxygen depressurization in some way. they just lost conscious. that might explain why the plane just dropped steadily for eight minutes until it just crashed on that mountain. >> given your experience what do you make of that theory? while you are answering, we're looking at a simulation here on the screen we've been running by nbc news according to the timeline, but can you speak to

so finding that box, and if the box is destroyed, finding the chip that goes inside the box is going to be critical to unraveling this mystery. they want to marry those pieces of information together. that's why the director today of the b.e.a. said this may not be something you get from us in a couple of days. it may take weeks or even months. but i found it interesting he said that the last communication between the pilots and the control tower was very routine, about continuing its existing route, the route it had been assigned. it was nothing about any sort of a problem. so that would suggest to you that at least at the last communication, the pilots did not yet at that point have anything that they were facing that was unusual or extreme in nature. but i think most outside experts say something must have happened. at 38,000 feet to cause the pilots to decide that they needed to descend and then fail to communicate with their traffic control. >> nbc's tom costello reporting in washington for us. tom, thanks so much. we want to get in this family statement about the loss of the am
