joining me simone boyce. this has taken so long to figure out what might happen. residents there and how's it feeling outside? >> reporter: that storm fatigue is so real. especially among cynical floridians who have weathered so many storms in the past. hurricane dorian has been super powerful and stalled out for hours bringing tons of uncertainty to this area. take a look at the massive waves behind us. you can still see the effects of this category 2 hurricane. these waves reaching about 15 feet in height and this is not even high tide right now. you can still see the power and the might of this storm. i've been talking to residents here on palm beach island. an area that has been ordered to mandatorily evacuate. we are finally starting to see some residents return to this area. police check points are still in place, but they are allowing some residents to return back here. and this community is really hoping to get back to normal within the next few days although officials are warning to keep an eye on this storm surge. we know that storm surge accounts for 50

joining me now from west palm beach, florida, is simone boyce where conditions look like they've gottentime i talked to you. >> reporter: ali, you know, these rain squalls, these outer bands, they come and go very quickly. and they are very fierce and strong when they start to pour down on us. i think we're about to get another one right now. that wind is picking up. we're seeing palms falling off of trees here. just a reminder there is a category 2 hurricane still out there. i mane, thethere. on the other hand, residents here are still breathing a sigh of relief as they remain vigilant. the tropical storm warning is still in effect here. that hurricane watch here at least in palm beach has been canceled. that storm surge warning here also canceled. but the storm surge is something that officials are going to be banging the drum about in all of these coastal cities on the eastern coast of florida as hurricane dorian continues its track up north. that is something that these barrier islands -- these low-lying areas are really going to have to be wary of. in those areas we could see storm

. >> joining me now, nbc's cathy park in charleston, nbc's simone boyce in myrtle beach and al roker. first to cathy park, let's talk about what's going on in charleston in the low country that's so vulnerable right now. >> reporter: andrea, good afternoon to you. we have embedded with the emergency unit with the medical university of south carolina. we are actually doing this ride along and getting better perspective of what we're seeing on the ground. i want to bring in brian wood. how bad is the situation right now? >> this is our main thorough fare, our main point of egress and ingress out of charles. it's been shut down due to flooding in multiple areas. >> reporter: we've seen a lot of folks driving through the conditions. what should they know? >> turn around, don't drown. do not go out on the roads right now. this is a very serious storm. we're in a storm surge warning. if you do not have to be outside, please stay inside. >> reporter: how concerned are you with the high tide? it's supposed to come in at 2:00 this afternoon? >> high tide on a normal day in charleston is always

way is where i spent hurricane florence last year on myrtle beach and that's where we'll find simone boyce. what are the conditions like where you are? >> reporter: ali, the rain is still coming down, the pretty fierce wind gusts. as you can see, this water rising up behind me because we are currently in high tide right now. i know that is something we've been talking about a lot but it is of concern because it just means that this wall of water can be pushed even further into the city and we're already seeing some instances of flooding in residential areas and shopping centers here in myrtle beach. ali, i started out covering hurricane dorian in south florida, in west palm beach. then we moved up north near orlando, daytona beach, and i can tell you that the damage we're seeing here in myrtle beach, south carolina, and all along the carolinas is far worse than anything i laid my eyes on in florida. just as an example, tornado warnings. we woke up to some of those this morning around 4:00 this morning and then later on we found out that there were possible tornadoes that actually touched d

there's simon boyce who will join us. michelle, let's start with just where we are with this storm and what we're looking at in terms of hitting the carolinas. >> yeah, hi there, chris. well, ali is in charleston mimp do want to mention they didn't get that inundation of water because actually their highest water height happened during low tide. that will not be the case for north carolina. so we're going to talk about that. we're also worried with this system with severe weather we do have a tornado watch for parts of south carolina until 4:00 p.m., parts of north carolina until 7. we're going to be watching this very, very closely. this is spawning off a lot of super cells. that's something we're going to watch. the latest, as of the 2:00 p.m. advisory, not much has changed except for the location. 60 miles south of myrtle beach, south carolina, winds are still at 110. that makes it a category 2 storm. and it's moving at 8 miles per hour. not super fast but not super slow. we do expect it to pick up as it passes north c
