bp did direct us to their blog at state of the gulf.com.study and points to an october 2014 study that found no minimal long-term impact on killifish. joining me today is dr. andrew whitehead, a professor at the environmental toxicology department at uc davis. also a physician from south louisiana who has treated over 100 patients who were exposed to the products of the spill. gentlemen, great to have you with us tonight. dr. whitehead, you first. what's your reaction to bp's senior vice president geoff morrell saying that many of the studies that activists push are far removed from the reality of the resilient of the gulf environment? what's your reaction to that? >> it's important to note that science is an interevident enterprise, that we build evidence over many studies over many years. a lot of people are studying what's going on in the gulf. our first study was criticized by bp because it was a field study. and that it wasn't based in sort of controlled conditions in the lab. now bp is criticizing other studies because they're lab stu

that is the first headline from bp. its fourth-quarter adjusted profit $2.4 billion bp interestingly has been on an adjusted probability estimate basis. these oil companies are going through a tough time. we have had layoffs and drilling delays, more than $40 billion in spending cuts from the big oil players as oil companies scramble to ensure they have got enough cash on hand to essentially continue paying out dividends and bp is continuing to pay out its dividends. the big oil giant said yes today. exxon mobil raised its annual dividend but accented cut its share purchases for the current quarter to a 14 year low. that was yesterday. what is interesting is organic capital expenditure 20 $2.9 billion. the company has seen about 23 -- 23 billion as of the third quarter. some interesting headlines from bp. the dividend is in line with estimates. what is your early take on these figures? >> he has been a street for his expectation is they would come in with $1.6 billion for the fourth quarter and they have two in a quarte

could bp really be taking over? >> why not. it is 30% lower and exxon mobil ended up being an obvious name. maybe they feel the worst is behind it and they can get organizations and cut out some fat to make more profit. >> there are a lot of people who are not interested in the bp stock. is that a benefit for them? >> it would be. >> in the long-term, the problem is that it gets taken over and the dividend sustainability comes into question. it will come into question with oil prices staying at $50. i do not think it will. >> let's talk about what you have been doing. you look at the last months and you see some of the pieces. have you? >> i have. i have been picking up certain areas. not so much bp, shell, and exxon. it has been absolutely decimated. you look and see producers. and you are getting fantastic value. >> there is a lot of pain to come. how long are you going to hold it? >> we have seen sharp drop -- sharp drops and oil prices are way higher. i'm thinking ok we are going to get a lot of supply destruction and capit

bp disputes that claim. >> what about the solution they used? that make it worse. >> that's the whole problem we get. if they never sprayed nothing -- once you put a chemical you done destroy the gulf by putting the oil in there. why would you compound matters by putting chemicals in there? >> they put the chemical on the oil spill. it massed up and fell to the bottom. it is still there. >> it is stopping the environment from cleaning itself. it just sucks up the oil. in the old days when you had an oil spill, they would throw hay on the oil because they wouldn't put chemicals. >> it would absorb it. >> it would float to the top. oil is lighter than water. water is heavier than oil. why would you sichknk it to the bottom? wouldn't it be easier to pick up on the top? >> while the gulf is left with chemical residue, many residents are left with health issues from rashes on the skin to respiratory problems to fatigue. it's a health mystery. >> we're checking air quality over here. you see that lever that goes across the beach? so the wind would blo

bp told us in a statement when asked about cat island. they say cat island was rapidly eroding before the deep water horizon accident in 2010. primarily due to erosion from hurricanes katrina and rita. what is your response to that? >> it's a shape. bp has attorney a page out of the book of hitler to say, you keep saying things over and over to the public and the people will think it's the truth. and the sad thing is it's totally false. that island was in perfect condition. we had eight-footmangrove trees. you saw the pictures. i photographed that island two years in the making it was gone. are you telling me that island can disappear that quickly? we saw the pictures of the oil over the roots covering the mangrove trees that would kill those. once those tries deeed, that's it. they're gone. there's no more island because as the root system dies so does the island. so for b.p. to continuously put up their propaganda. take the ads off tv one day of what they spend nationwide to tell everybody how good they are and promote themselves as sav

we had a desen set of results from bp yesterday surprising the market. you have an interesting possible perspective on the corporate future. >> well, bp is in a class of its own because of the fall out from the gulf of mexico accident which is now nearly five years agatha happened april 2010 and of course the consequences of that, the damages that bp still has to pay has not yet been finally quantified and of course we're talking about billions and billions of dollars here. so for bp to possibly be prey to merger talks or an acquisition which is something we hear talked about quite a lot, you do wonder why anybody would do that given that bp still has these liabilities. meanwhile, among the ranks of the major oil companies we are in a situation where a 40, 50 $60 oil price is what we're going to be living with for the next year or two which bob dudley the ceo of bp was suggesting that then take our minds back to the last time we had low oil prices or lower price which is is the end of the 1990s. we had major mergers. now today we have a second tier of pl

on the picket line at bp. jeff, can you hear us now? >> now i got you, guys.t really loud here. the chanting goes on as perhaps you see around me. this is a strike that has been going on for three weeks. nobody taking a lot of interest. i tell you they're taking interest right now, because look what gas prices have done. when this strike started, on february 1st, gas prices were at about 2.05 a gallon. they're now at 2.32. a lot of oil analysts are saying this is part of the reason because there is fear about shutdowns. crude at the same time, has remained fairly stable. in fact has even gone down some from the high at 60. leo girard, the president of the u.s. steelworkers, said today in atlanta, that the strike could even expand farther. we're now at 15 facilities around the country, 12 of them, refineries like this one. maybe you hear. they get a lot of support out here in northwest indiana. which is a hotbed of labor. here is what roger reed, of wells fargo bank, one of the analysts there said, the impacts of the strike may become more apparent in the days
