brad? brad: yeah one of the first changes they want to make is training on how they transport prisoners. maureen, you talked about the spinal cord damage. that was one of the things we learned at a press conference just about 1 1/2 hours ago. that was the autopsy results for the death of freddie gray that he died of spinal cord damage. we'll show you some video of his arrest. police are talking about that video. they say at this point, they do not see any evidence that police officers used force against this man. >> i've been recording. brad: the video of the april 12th arrest of 25-year-old freddie gray shows officers struggling to get a screaming suspect into a police transport van. a woman yells out -- >> that boy's leg was broke! his leg broke and y'all are dragging him like dead! brad: within an hour gray is in a coma and his spinal cord damaged. yesterday, he died. now, the city is being described as on edge. hundreds gathered to protest. gray's friends demand answers. >> they beat hi

brad is live in baltimore with what happened inside the van. brad? brad: a week and a half ago, police told us that freddie gray died of spinal cord injuries. and they said at that point that they believe the injuries happened inside the van and not out on the sidewalk. and now we know more about why they believe that. the sources very familiar with the investigation told me today that injuries have been discovered on freddie gray's head consistent that matches up with a bolt in the back of the police transport van into which he was put after his arrest. now, they tell us that freddie gray was handcuffed behind his back. that he was in leg shackles and the theory is that he was standing up in the van kind of like this and that he went flying for whatever reason his head contacting the wall and the injuries that he suffered to his spinal cord happening at some point in that fall. now, the police report was released today to the state's attorney. the state's attorney has announced that her investigation is under way. the medical examiner has not comple

in baltimore, brad bell, abc 7 news. maureen: thank you, brad. a first hand look at what a store owner saw the night that looters destroyed his business. still ahead in our continuing coverage, what the store owner says upset him the most as he watched hundreds pillage his store. during the rioting earlier this week, one baltimore man protected his workplace with a machete. brian woodyard lives a few blocks from a bar where he works as a bouncer. as the situation deteriorated on monday woodyard grabbed a machete, put on a mask and helped his boss fend off looters. vince then neighbors have been calling him the baltimore batman. >> i mean but a lot of us did defend our homes, defend our storefronts, defend our bars and i mean, we did our best. maureen: while some looters made their way inside woodyard was able to keep a large number out. an ex-convict, woodyard said he wanted to stand up for the people who gave him a second chance. a baltimore city councilman is standing by his push to stop using a word to describe the rioters. a word used by many

brad, very busy around where you are right now. brad: yeah, it's an extraordinary scene. so we're at the intersection of north avenue pennsylvania avenue. we want to pan around and show you what's going on. large crowd gathered around here. a lot are media. a lot of people are coming out to see what's going on. it's peaceful. it's loud. folks are talking. take a look over here and you can see that the police are keeping a firm line. a little while ago, they actually closed off the sidewalk in both directions so people could no longer walk across west north avenue. they didn't tell us why they did that. but this intersection of course, is a big part of the story because last night this c.v.s. was really -- the c.v.s. over here was the first place that was really looted and then set on fire. now now, we can show you some of the pictures that took place yesterday. we were there when it started. police had been tipped off that high school students were going to gather and do something they were calling a purge. police were there. students started throwing stones. the police s

brad bell, abc 7 news. maureen: a funeral for freddie gray is planned for monday at new shilo baptist church in baltimore. his wake will be sunday afternoon at vaughn green funeral home. issues of race and the police will be the topics at a day long symposium sponsored by the smithsonian tomorrow much at least two of the sessions will be on the impact of the protests in ferguson, missouri, on american history. all the events are sold out. those events in ferguson sparked a surge in demand for police body cameras and that's had a major impact on camera maker taser international. since august 8th, the day before the shooting death of michael brown, the stock's value has nearly tripled in value. it closed today just under $30 a share. taser international's other major product is the stun gun and it is being shelved at fairfax county's jail. the move is considered temporary while the department investigates the death of a 37-year-old woman after she was stunned during an altercation with guards in february. a c

near annapolis, brad bell, abc 7 news. autria: we're also following new developments in the kidnapping and deadly shooting at the census bureau. we now know the guard who was shot has died and new this noon the accused shooter is identified as ronald anderson. jeanette reyes has reaction from shocked census bureau employees. jeanette: things aren't completely back to normal here at the u.s. census bureau after a shootout left one guard dead. in fact you can still see the main entrance here is closed off. employees are at a different entrance. the federal center is operating on a two-hour delay today because of yesterday's incident. earlier this morning, employees were notified they could use unscheduled leave or telework. employees are being granted an excused absence today. the armed kidnapping took place in northeast d.c. around 5:00 yesterday afternoon. the suspect and victim was sighted here by a security guard shot in the chest multiple times and died shortly after. the chase ended in a crash and shootout in northeast

brad bell has more developments from today's sentencing. brad? brad: big sentence today, leon. the judge has sent joey poindexter, 40 years old now to prison for 150 years and the judge says keeping him in prison for the rest of his life is the only way to protect the community. prosecutors claim and the judge agreed that joey poindexter is the worst and most prolific rapist in the history of montgomery county. >> he hunted human beings. brad: poindexter devoted his life to playing beer pong with college aged men looking for victims, befreniending them and getting them drunk. this catches him in action leaped an 18-year-old clearly intoxicated young man out of a college park bar. that victim taken to poindexter's home in gait again and again. he had the courage to go to police. they recorded this call between the victim and poindexter. >> no matter what did happen or didn't happen like i said, i was pretty trashed. brad: that audio helped lead to a conviction in february on multiple assault charges. the charge of rape technically doesn't apply to a male on male crime. state's a

brad, what did he have to say? >> well, the governor also said the definition of compromise is both sides are not entirely happy. and he says they did work out some compromise and the legislature did adjourn last night at midnight as they're required to do. this morning, the governor has been in the second floor of the historic statehouse signing 120 bills into law. before that he took time to have a press conference where he did tell us he feels like he has accomplished many of the goals he promised the people of the state of maryland. primarily that he would reduce spending and cut taxes. >> while i have a number of concerns with the general assembly's actions on the budget, we ended the session on a high note by reigning in spending, cutting taxes providing record investment in education and changing the trajectory of the state. brad: two primary areas of disagreement. a 2% raise for state employees. governor didn't want to fund it. he wanted to fund it but didn't believe the money existed for it. and as well a

in baltimore, brad bell, abc 7 news. leon: thank you, brad. demonstrations over the death of freddie gray has spread to other cities as well. they are going to vernon square for two hours for a rally and march to the white house. last night, two people were shot during protests in ferguson missouri and today, the new u.s. attorney general called for calm. >> these senseless acts of violence are not only a grave danger to the community and they must stop but they are also counterproductive to the ultimate goal here which is developing a respectable conversation within the baltimore community and across the nation about the way our law enforcement officers interact with the residents that we are charged to serve and to protect. leon: there was scrutiny on those with that charge in baltimore for many quarters. maryland's attorney general is investigating the baltimore police department's actions in freddie gray's death. alison? alison: this week's violence, of course, led to an historic day at camden yard as a baseball game was being played witho

brad? brad: yeah jummy a week ago -- a week and a half ago the police said they would complete their investigation by tomorrow. and as you said they have now released the fact that they have completed that investigation and handed the results over to the state's attorney today, a day early. they did not reveal anything about that investigation other than that there was an additional van stop for freddie gray. we can show you the video. you can recall during the riots we were doing stories about the arrest of freddie gray. he was picked up in west baltimore. handled seemingly roughly in the video by police and put in the back of a transport van. well, the police have said they knew that he was ok going into the back of that van. and when he came out, well he was near death. police revealed today there was one additional van stop that they didn't know about before before freddie gray got medical attention. the bottom line from the commissioner, he says, their report is now in the hands of the

in waldorf, brad bell, abc 7 news. alison: brad, thank you. a fairfax county police officer is being held without bond tonight charged with possessing child pornography and now investigators are setting up a hotline specifically related to the bud walker case. to find out if there are anymore potential victims, northern virginia bureau chief jeff goldberg first reported walker's arrest last night at 5:00 and he is live in alexandria with more on how the center for missing and exploited children helped start this investigation. jeff? jeff: it really did. a tip came into the center here in alexandria and after that point, fairfax county police got involved. bud walker was arraigned today in a courtroom in fairfax county. no comment from his attorney. but now, the investigation into the former public information officer is moving forward. the arrest of bud walker has hit hard in fairfax county from everyday citizens -- >> shocked about it. reporter: to the chief of police. >> this matter is disappointing to all of us. jeff: and it all started her

brad bell is live at that scene and the latest with the investigation. brad? brad: yes scott, it's been an all day effort. this crash happened at 7:00 a.m., as you said, and just in the last half-hour, they got this road open and you can see that the tracks are -- the cars are now moving over the area where the crash was. you can see that the disturbed area, that was it. the work that was going on now and environmental crew out here cleaning up some of the oil that was spilled. this was a massive crash. the two big rigs are barely recognizable. in the foreground, the burned out remains of the truck which had been headed eastbound with a load of lumber. state police found the body of a male driver in there. behind it that twisted mess is the cab of the westbound truck. a man and his female passenger killed in there as the trucks hit head on at highway speeds. >> the impact was -- it was a devastating impact. brad: the state police investigation is just getting started but it appears that it was the westbound truck which fails to stay in its lane. this tractor-t
