houston fire department senior captain brad hawthorne., great to speak with you today. >> you, too. >>> we're looking at this amazing video and watching this construction worker literally hanging on this ledge. at one point he slips off down to the next level. where were you at this point in time. >> when we first arrived they told under the circumstances three workers on the roof. we sent the ladder to the roof. when we got to the roof we could see nobody was there and we saw the gentleman come out of the doors and we lowered the ladder down to him to pick him up. >> when you were trying to get there -- we just saw him jump down to the next level. help us understand how difficult it was. incredibly hot. you see the roof cave right after you get him. what were the circumstances trying to get to him? >> the heat was -- i was in full bunker gear, the heat was very hot. you're trying to get to him and the ladder truck will only go so fast. we were trying to get to him before he jumped or before he had to jump. >> what would have happened, ca

firefighter on the end of that lard and helped rest cute construction worker, senior captain brad hawthorneepartment. he joins me tonight. >> captain, this rescue is extraordinary. when the video starts, how long had the fire been going on about at that point? >> not long. we pulled up and there wasn't much fire but it moved through the entire building in a couple of minutes. >> it moved that fast. >> it moved extremely fast. faeft-mo fastest-moving fire i've ever ben to. >> when you arrived on the scene were you immediately aware this construction worker was trapped up there? >> we had reports. our chief told us to go to the north side of the building, there was three men trapped on the roof. so we got there, positioned the ladder truck, and got the ladder set up to the roof when we started noticing we had a small amount of fire on the left side, climbed about halfway up the ladder i noticed the whole attic roof was on fire. then just seconds later by the time i get to the top of the ladder the entire roof was completely involved in fire. >> was it moving that fast because of the winds? wh

he's here this morning with firefighters brad hawthorne and dwayne wyble.ow close you came? >> i saw the flames coming from the front side of the building but i didn't realize it had reached to that magnitude around the back side and the corner. basically i was on the last corner of the building that didn't burn. >> you're a supervisor. little did you know how fast it was moving. at what point did you realize i'm trapped, there's no way out? >> actually, i got up there with a fire extinguisher and tried to slow it down for them to get there and it was pretty well contained. it want spreading at that point and i went down actually below and looked and it want spreading and i -- my boss actually called me, david harrison called me and said where are you at? i said i'm up here. he said you need to get down now. that's when i saw the smoke that had it started to spread and from there i knew i was in trouble, want going to be easy to get out. >> you found the balcony and then there's that moment you swing to the fourth floor. what's going through your mind or is

as flames engulfed the site houston fire captain brad hawthorne knew he and his team needed to move quicklyss you've got to, to use the term rink a lot to save a lot. that's a lot. in a viable save, you risk more. you stretch yourselves out there. >> oh jesus. they're going to bring the ladder truck over. >> reporter: construction worker curtis could hear the fire engines outside but he wasn't prepared with how fast the flames spread. within minutes he was trapped. >> i got to the window. like i said it was jammed. i count get out. i thought, i'm going to die right here. said, i've got to say a prayer. god, get me out of this. >> reporter: finally he was able to get outside but he was stranded five stories up. >> i drop dound the fourth floor patio. i kept thinking how am i going to drop. how am i going to swing. >> you could hear the roar of the fire. as we're doing that he jumps from the fifth to the fourth floor, as he gets to the fourth -- i was on the ladder in full gear. it was really hot. >> now one floor down he still had to wait for the ladder and captain hawthorne to reach him. >>
