nbc's matt bradley is joining us from rome. good morning to you. this is pretty startling, the biggest single day increase in deaths and infections despite the fact they've been on a nationwide lockdown for almost two weeks. do authorities feel like the shelter-in-place is not working? >> reporter: yasmin, there's a lot to say about this. they don't call it shelter-in-place here. they call it a lockdown. a lot of euphemisms talked about about this. obviously mayor de blasio in new york is calling it shelter-in-place, reminiscent of some kind of natural disaster. you could look at this several different ways. with the deaths, single highest increase in deaths was today with 475. that is by far the largest single day increase in deaths. that might not have anything to do with the lockdown. that might still be a residual case of people who contracted the virus from before the lockdown had been implemented. more than two-thirds of the case are in the north of italy, not here in rome. that could be people who had already contracted the disease. same wit

joining us now from rome, italy, matt bradley. matt, good to have you with us.now longer than anyone, so you have the perspective of how things are unfolding in italy. what is the latest situation there right now? does it seem like the strict lockdown measures are start to go work when you look at these back sxo back days and the numbers they've produced? >> yeah. you know, we don't really talk about good news here. that's not a term we're bandying about. 600 people is not the world record setting high that we saw on saturday. that was a dizzying height. 793 dead in one day on saturday. and, yes, so yesterday we saw 600 dead. that is less, but that's not necessarily good news. not just because i don't want to instill false hope in people, but because that number could very easily go up once again. before we reach that 793 number, the numbers were going up and down. so to read into what's happening on the ground just based on iterations of numbers and mathematics, it's really not enough. it's not scientific. so that is why, you know, we can't really necessarily s

joining us from rome nbc news foreign correspondent matt bradley. matt, good to speak to you.ou were right yesterday to say it's too early to say we've turned the corner and no one should be looking at the decline prior to today as a sign that the situation is under control as we see what has happened in the past 24 hours? >> reporter: that's right, ayman, there was optimism. people were hopeful, that, look, the numbers were going down, not in a big way but in a small way, hoping that the unprecedented two-week old nation lockdown would have effects with the statistics. you can't base a trend on small cases in numbers in a few days. that's exactly what will we saw yesterday. as you mentioned, 743 deaths, an appalling number up there with the world record on saturday which is 793 deaths in one day here in italy. and we're going to hear those numbers again at 6:00 p.m. local time. that's about eight hours from now. and there's no reason to necessarily believe that those numbers are going to be going down. the number of transmissions has also been increasing here in italy. and it

matt bradley is in rome for us. good to have you with us. a lot of talk as to whether or not a drastic measure like this is going to work. give us the assessment, the read on the ground. how is this actually playing out? are people following the quarantine directive so far and staying at home? >> reporter: yeah, ayman, there's one group that is definitely following the rules and that is foreign tourists. it helps that there's basically none of them here. as you can see, this is closed and has been for a couple of days. we're entering the height of the tourist season. as you can see, it's kind of a ghost town. as for italians, they do seem to be following the rules. they can circulate, they can go around, they can go to work, restaurants and grocery stores. that's all part of it. they're supposed to be staying about three feet away from each other and actually the crew and i, we were just out for lunch and there was a waiter who served us, he was wearing surgical gloves. he made us all sit separately at different tables. this is a ghost town,
