matt bradley is in paris, france, for us, right now.ies that have confirmed cases with the new strain. how are the countries trying to battle the new strain? >> they are doing it from the old playbook. not that old. just a couple of months old. they're locking down confining, everybody. that's proved effective stopping the virus. the other method is blocking travel from the u.k. you mentioned countries that have seen evidence of the virus. france, announced they had a patient that had the new variant on friday night. yesterday, we had spain, sweden, canada, japan. and throughout the world, lebanon, australia, multiple countries throughout europe. all of those cases can in some way, or another, be traced back to the u.k., with the exception of that one in canada, you just mentioned. blocking off travel from the united kingdom has so far proven to be the only real method that scientists have found the spread of that new variant. the other thing is vaccine. all 27 members of the european union are rolling out a continent-wide effort, start

and hat bradley bradley, what d about this discovery?> reporter: a man who is a french citizen when had been living in the uk, he came back to france around december 19 presumably for the holidays and then he tested positive. and this was announced late last night. today we heard that sweden, spain and japan also have their own cases of this new variant, so that is very troubling. they join about six european countries who have now registered some case of this virus. and all of these cases, almost all of these cases, have some connection to britain. so all of them have come from the british aisisles which vindicates this notion of cutting off britain from the rest of the world to try to prevent the new variant from spreading. now it seems that lot of countries have effectively blocked themselves off from britain. but the fact is that just like the original strain of covid, there is really no reversing it. the blocking isn't going to work any more because all of these countries have this virus now. it is just part of the pandemic. and so,

matt bradley is in paris. matt, welcome to you.h europeans reacting to these new developments? >> reporter: the first thing they're doing more than anything else, there is a twofold strategy. one is the tried and tested measure of lockdowns and that is something that's really been the only way, up until this vaccine, that has really shown to slow the spread of this virus. in some dozen countries, that's really threatening to a lot of european governments and they are willing to take any action. the best way to do that is to cut off travel to europe. the variant on the continent has some relationship to europe. it was a french national who lives in the u.k. and he was visiting france when he was tested positive and it was discovered he had this new variant. he's asymptomatic, he's at home, and that just goes to show what scientists are saying, that this new variant is not necessarily more deadly, it's not in addition to the vaccines, but like you said, it spreads faster. the problem is, because it spreads faster, it may mutate faste

matt bradley is in london for us. matt, the newspapers over there doing play off of george michael's "last christmas." they're calling it "lost christmas." what do we know about this strain? >> reporter: well, i was actually calling kit, you know, the prime minister who stole christmas, because actually, the prime minister had promised that there was going to be a long christmas here in britain. and he went back on his word. that's outraged a lot of people. that new strain you're asking about, it's very interesting. we know that it affects the mutations in that strain. the binding proteins. so the thing that attaches the virus to cells and causes it to propagate. it's accelerated the way that this cell reproduces. that means it's about 70% faster. now, that means that it's more contagious. what it doesn't mean is that the virus is more deadly. there's no evidence that it kills people anymore or any faster. and it doesn't mean that the vaccines that currently exist aren't going to be working with this new virus. now, t

matt bradley is following the latest for us from paris.s the situation stand this morning? >> well, it looks as though right now in britain that the government is preparing to clamp down on kind of the rest of the country. there's 6 million britons are going to join 18 million britons already under that tier 4 restriction. tier 4 really, it's more like a lockdown. basically just going exactly back to where britain was and a lot of other countries were just a couple of months ago. that's because it's not just that new strain. there's another new strain of which two cases have been seen in britain. those two cases are in isolation. the other strain was first noticed in south africa and now there's, of course, travel restrictions on south africa. a lot of other countries throughout the world imposed travel restrictions on south africa just as they've done with great britain. this is all a major source of concern and that's why the british government appears to be moving right after christmas to put these restrictions in place. a lot of scient
