let's bring in nbc news international correspondent matt bradley, joining us from beirut, lebanon.ls seemed to be pretty measured to those strikes from israel over the weekend, they, quote, did limited damage, but iran supreme leader is using more charged language, could we see a response from iran to the israeli strike? >> reporter: kate that's the million-dollar question, that's going to determine where this goes from here, it's a very dangerous moment and every government in the middle east, with few exceptions, has condemned this retaliatory strike so the ball is in tehran court. the supreme leader said at one point that this the impact of this strike shouldn't be overstated or diminished or understated, i'm paraphrasing. . that israeli strike was calibrated to do enough to put them on notice. at the same time, not inviting further retaliation that could break this out into a region-wide war, we haven't heard from the irans whether they intend to respond, it looks like for now the whole region is kind of out of the woods. >> israel is still continuing its assault on gaza, there

nbc's matt bradley is in beirut.s up to date, matt. >> reporter: what we're seeing here is a last-ditch event for another attempt to try to ink some deal to free the remaining hostages in the gaza strip. there are thought to be about 100 of them. many have already been killed. it's secretary blinken's 11th trip to the middle east. it points to some opening. the death of the leader of hamas who was a hard liner in the negotiations, back to november last year when there was a week-long pause in the fighting and more than 100 hostages were freed, that was the last time it was successful. ever since then round after round of negotiations have been met with failure. we're seeing this happening again because of this opening, the death of the leader of hezbollah. there's been a change in the leadership of these militant organizations that the israelis have been fighting for more than the past year. there's no real indication that any of this effort towards a resolution is going to go anywhere at all, if for no other reason
