nbc's matt bradley is in beirut.s up to date, matt. >> reporter: what we're seeing here is a last-ditch event for another attempt to try to ink some deal to free the remaining hostages in the gaza strip. there are thought to be about 100 of them. many have already been killed. it's secretary blinken's 11th trip to the middle east. it points to some opening. the death of the leader of hamas who was a hard liner in the negotiations, back to november last year when there was a week-long pause in the fighting and more than 100 hostages were freed, that was the last time it was successful. ever since then round after round of negotiations have been met with failure. we're seeing this happening again because of this opening, the death of the leader of hezbollah. there's been a change in the leadership of these militant organizations that the israelis have been fighting for more than the past year. there's no real indication that any of this effort towards a resolution is going to go anywhere at all, if for no other reason
