. >> the party at the brandenberg went on all night long as they chipped away at the wall, as they danceduman story. this is the story of humankind. i mean, political tie rants can only go so far, but in the end it's how people respond to their captivity and how they get out of it and how they relate to one another. and i think that's the enduring lesson of everything i've seen in journalism. it's a night to remember. >> wow. and tom joins us now live from berlin 30 years after that broadcast, anniversary is coming up this weekend. tom, as you said in the piece there, you were in berlin having no idea that you were about to be witness in the first reporter there to cover history. what was it like to be there that night? >> well, i just want to say one thing at the outset, i made several references that i did this. but the fact is, it was a real team effort on the part of nbc. we got lucky, our foreign editor said you ought to go to germany, seems to be a lot going on. so i came here and everybody was in place and ready to go. and then when we came out here that night, owning that story, i
