brandon judd from the national border security council.ou think about the threat and the possibility of getting nasty, quote, unquote? >> he is being the leader that everybody expected him to be. those people that voted for president trump, they expected him to be out in front on these issues. that's exactly what he is doing which is going to make those people happy. what we have to look at is we're looking at the safety of the american public. even hard core liberals in chicago are now saying crime is way too much. we've got to suppress the crime and that normally starts at the border. we've got to secure our border in order to secure the safety of the american public. >> bill: do you think a shutdown is a good idea on this issue? >> i do. i would absolutely 100% support a shutdown. i'm a federal employee. it will affect me and my family. but i can tell you that without border security we just don't have the safety and security. when i was a little kid growing up my parents had no problem letting me walk a mile away to go to the park. tod

joining us now is brandon judd president of the national border patrol council.ngs are down 20% since the may peak. is the white house immigration policy succeeding? >> to an extent it is. we have to be careful when we look at numbers because we've had a drop in the last six out of the last seven years we've had a drop from may to june and june to july. but any drop is going to be considered good. we have to sustain that drop. if you look back in april of 2017, that was the time when we should have implemented the zero tolerance policy. trump dropped illegal immigration to 45 year lows. unfortunately the department itself did not follow suit and didn't implement the necessary policies at that time. >> julie: dhs has released the latest crossing numbers. the number of people who attempted to illegally enter if mexico dropped to 31,303. after peaking in may, as you see it 40,333 officials caught 34,094 people trying to enter in june. how much did the zero tolerance policy program do you believe act as a deterrent? you say keep an open mind when it comes to these nu

joining us is brandon judd, active border patrol agent.the southern border are you surprised by these numbers? >> i'm not. most attention should be placed on the southern border because where that is most of the crossings take place. this new trend, it was foreseeable it, was predictable. we know that crime takes the path of least resistance and because the northern border is not as well-patrolled as the southwest border it was predictable crime will now come across the northern border is what we're exactly seeing. ashley: how do you stop it to your point? it is 5500 miles long? i lived up near the canadian border when i lived in montana of all places. such a vast, empty area. i hate to say it, if i'm a terrorist, would i rather go that route? >> look at the laws in canned today. they're very relaxed, as long as you're not on a terrorist watch list, which most people will not be on the terrorist watch list, you can fly into canada. you can get a temporary visitor visa. you can work your way to the border, cross the border illegally. i spen

brandon judd is with us. an active border agent, president of the national border patrol union.t? currently it is illegal. what are they doing? open the door say it is misdemeanor or anything? >> well, first off i don't know what it takes to win in space but i can tell you what it takes to win on the border. talk like that isn't going to do it. frankly, talk like that isn't going to do it. the happiest people right now when they hear this type of rhetoric are the heads of the criminal cartels because they know that when you have talk like this, they're going to be able to sell their product. they're going to be able to go out and get more people to come to the united states, under the guise they're going to be able to enter the united states and circumvent our laws. stuart: if it were decriminalized, a misdemeanor, what would the role be of the border patrol agents? >> first time crossing is a misdemeanor but it is still a crime. we still have to take them into custody. if you take away that misdemeanor, and you only give a ticket, you're not going to have very much role for the
