brandon pressley with 46.6. yes, democrats might be happy with this number in a very republican state, but fairly in elastic, not able to get above that. a little bit of a ceiling, a significant african american vote, particularly in this part of the state, the democratic part of the state. but brandon pressley wasn't able to run up the numbers there. and one other thing we noticed, there were even counties, again, even with what was seen as a strong democratic campaign on the republican tate reeves, actually flipped lafayette county, home to oxford, ole miss. it's a it's a college county, right now. tate reeves right now leading with almost 52% of the vote, four years ago, the democrat won that county. so this flipped and is now a republican county. and if you want to be if you're brandon pressley and you want to overcome him, tate reeves in a republican state, that's the kind of county you would have needed to win. and he just couldn't get there. so, again, this would have been more miraculous for democrats. t

and that is where the democrat, brandon pressley, is getting votes.s more of that has filled in. so here's the one place we're still waiting. we have nothing from the largest county in the state. jackson the suburbs around it. this gets more rural as you move out here. so here's the mathematical challenge right? no votes. it's a predominantly democratic area. so you say, wait, let's just wait and be cautious. it would be you know, it's just not right to call the race until you get votes from this area. however, the democratic candidate four years ago beat tate reeves by 40,000 votes in hinds county. so let's just hypothetically say that happened here. that would still not be enough. right. and so you're still looking there's more votes coming in, but there are still some votes out in the republican area. so this looks like the governor is on a path, but we need to wait and see what happens in here. so that's the one thing outstanding. plus, those virginia races. but now let's just go back to that dynamic. so what's happening tonight right at the begin

another governor race is mississippi, tate reeves, the incumbent governor, is taking on brandon pressley, the democratic governor. no democrat has won mississippi since 1899. he may be aided by the fact that he's elvis' second cousin and democrats are trying to taint reeves with a welfare scandal involving brett favrer so we'lle what happens down there. >> 2024, 360-plus days away but right around the corner when it comes to campaigning. talk about the races you're watching that might give us implications towards the next presidential election. >> it's interesting to me as i'm looking towards what's going on. a if you have things i'm sort of noting. we spoke about virginia. there's also toe me an interesting ballot measure in the state of ohio concerning marijuana. the reason i'm interested there, it would be the 24th state to legalize marijuana recreationally. all of these states have done so since 2012. they've done it in red states, blue states. ohio being a red state so it's not just blue states it's happening. and you noted, boris, guess how many days we are now until the iowa caucu

his opponent, brandon pressley, a state regulator, cousin of elvis pressley, rock 'n' roll legend. for pressley it's now or never. i think it looks like never early, but we have to wait for some more vote to come in there. there's one congressional race up in rhode island expected to go to the democrats. they've held that seat for, since 1995. you mentioned there are five state referendums. there are some big one, including here in ohio. ohio has two big votes on referendums. one is on legalizing marijuana. the other has to do with abortion which paints the picture possibly for 2024, how big that issue is. for state issue one, if you vote yes it's for putting abortion rights into the state's constitution. heading in this is a state that was positioned very well, about 15% of the vote in right now. looks like that would be a big win for abortion rights proponents and it may signal how abortion plays. we saw it play big in 2022. the question is how it works in ohio tonight. there's still a lot of vote here left to go, same day vote. we are looking at the early vote so far. but so far

the state of mississippi, where incumbent republican tate reeves is getting quite a run from brandon pressley second cousin. for more on the, let's go to steve kornacki. steve, what can you tell us about the rest on there? >> yeah, they are still counting state. 40% of the vote in mississippi. it's been more than eight hour since the polls closed, almost an all at the state. that's an important part. i'll get to it and a second didn't. you see tate reeves is leaving pressley, the democratic challenger. the county right now that has produced the most votes would be the soto county, right here, basically suburban men fuss, fast growing. take a look at the result here, about three quarters of the vote in. reeves is leading by 18 points. think about this, in 2019, tate reeves got elected. his margin statewide was five points. think of mississippi as a deeply red state, certainly presidential, but governor races can be closer. reeves won by five in 2019. we look at when counties come in, especially counting the margin by five points or more in these counties as they come in? so de soto county, thi

>> i can tell you that the democratic candidate, brandon pressley, has not shied away from mentioning his very famous second cousin. but what they say they're paying attention to more is exactly what you see here in jackson right now. these lines that are sort of snaking around the new jerusalem baptist church polling place that we're in at the moment. and part of that is because for the first time since 1890, voting for governor in mississippi will be determined only by the popular vote. they amended the state constitution to reform the way that all statewide officials, including governors, are elected. under the old system, candidates had to win a majority of the popular vote and a majority of state house districts. now, voting rights groups as well as democrats have long said that that old process that it diluted black voters and mississippi has the highest percentage of black residents in the nation. now, look, pressley says that he has a diverse coalition of supporters that range from the tennessee border all the way to the gulf shores. but i will tell you, jake, that democrats a
