welcome back to the program, brandon smith.how is governor mike pence seen in the state of indiana by the republicans, by the people? >> i wouldn't say he's as popular as the national folks are making him seem. he's been somewhat devicive as a governor. certainly, he came in on a message of continuing his policies of his predecessor mitch daniels. that has been a lot of his focus when you talk about his agenda with the legislature. but as was mentioned in that piece, he dealt with a lot of controversy in the way he handled certain issue, like the religious freedom debate, like this year in the signing of a harsh anti-abortion bill and the way he's handled that and the resistance to that. he's sort of been divisive because indiana is a pretty conservative state yet a republican governor seek reelection was in a virtual tie with his democratic opponent. >> woodruff: what is it about the way he's handled these issue, these controversies that's been a question for him? what's made it controversial? >> a big part of it is his philos

brandon ritman checking out two facts made tonight. >>> it was a powerful moment to have a grieving mother blame the death of her son on hillary clinton, but pat smith also implied hillary clinton is damaging her reputation. >> she lied to me and then called me a liar. [crowd booing ] >> reporter: this needs some context. smith says clinton told her her son's death was caused by backlash over a video that angered islamic fundamentalists, and clinton did not use the word liar but said smith is wrong about that. >> i certainly can't even imagine the grief that she has for losing her son, but she is wrong. she is absolutely wrong. >> reporter: fact checkers have worked on this claim before, and some families agree with smith saying clinton did mention that video, and others said she never did, but it's unprovable. we don't have recordings of these private conversations, and now while that speech was going on on stage, viewers on fox news heard from the candidate himself, donald trump who called in by phone. there, trump appeared to take credit for the convention being held in cleveland "i wanted it to be in ohio. i recommended it be in ohio" trump said
