professor brannon: welcome back to class. as you know, all semester we have been talking about ideas about age, expectations about age. the childhood is idealized. who gets to be an adult with the package of rights on responsibility? what does it mean to have chronological age? something like you could drive at 16 but back in the earlier periods we studied you are not an adult until 21. what does that all mean? old age, what people's expectations were, as you know i have been researching old age. today, i want to talk a little bit about what i have been doing. i also want to put it in the perspective of childhood. this semester we spent a lot of time thinking about each life stage and its expectations. we have not done a lot yet to try to try to put it together. i tried to do that heavy lifting and talk about it in terms of the american revolution. the first thing a lot of people who have not had this class say is maybe they did not think of age at all. maybe you are making something up that we cared about today. that's not t
