nbc's ellison barber is with us from branson. ellison, what is the scene there? >> reporter: you can see behind me that group of black lives matter protesters. they marched this way from a store earlier this morning. they have been outside in this area protesting a store that sells a lot of confederate what they call southern heritage items. sorry, sir. if you keep walking this way, you can see some of the group. they have grown significantly each weekend as they've come out to protest. as they've come here, so have these people on the other side, people who have come out with confederate flags in support of this store. at one point today these groups, they met up on the other side of the sidewalk. things were tense with the one group that is in support of this store, yelling racial slurs at the other protesters. if you look over here, you can see they are armed. protesters on both sides we have seen bringing weapons. as we walk over this way, i guess i need to keep walking so you can see really what we're seeing. the police are separating these two groups, but t

nbc's ellison barber is in branson. tell us, how did the branson protests get started? who are the organizers. >> reporter: there have been about five protests related to the black lives matter movement in support of black lives matter since, you know, we saw all the protests springing up across the country. there have been three in front of this particular store dixie outfitters where they sell a lot of confederate flags, confederate t-shirts, paraphernalia and things like that. this was organized initially by a lot of high schoolers. we talked with one of those organizers yesterday. she told us why it was important for her to do that. >> a store filled with hate symbols, confederate flags is obviously something that i don't think should be presented as a family friendly business. i do think we can push them to a point to understand that there is no monetary gain in hatred and they will lose business. we are a combination of teenagers and voices in our community that saw a change that needed to happen and we looked to ourselves to see what it was that we could do. and

nbc's ellison barber is in branson, missouri. i have been watching your reporting all day.has not been a quiet location here, certainly, ellison. what is the latest? >> no, it really has not. this protest really started to get under way about five hours ago. you can see behind me people are still here. it is smaller than it was earlier this afternoon. but right now it seems like neither side really has plans to break up and go home at this point. again, they have been out here for at least five hours now. at one point, the protesters met on the same side of the street. both sides were angry. black lives matter protesters saying that the confederate flag, this store, dixie outfitters is a symbol of racism, especially because this store is owned by a man who is at least in the past a member of the kkk. he was listed as a den master in a lawsuit in 1992. we tried to ask him about his ties to the kkk yesterday, but he told us he had no comment on that. no comment on any of this. on the other side of the street, protesters say that this is about free speech heritage. when the bl
