monique braxton is live at the scene with new information. fill us in, monique. >> reporter: for the past hour we have watched firefighters huddled outside discussing the situation. what we know is that at least eight people have been injured. something that's interesting is, you can see in the far distance to the back of that ladder truck, you notice that the montgomery county coroner has also arrived. he is taking pictures. we have not been told if anyone has passed away. we're still waiting for information. the fire chief has told us he will speak to us momentarily. but an hour has passed since we first learned that. the firefighters were called here about an hour and a half ago to a two-alarm blaze. one person suffering from cardiac arrest. as many as seven others injured. and right now we're trying to find the extent of everyone's injuries. we did speak to someone here on the scene who said a man he described as his friend was frantically trying to escape the blaze along with two daughters. we understand that the fire began on the third

let's get right to nbc10's monique braxton. she's been following the investigation since early this morning. >> reporter: the relationship between those three individuals who passed away and the child in critical condition still isn't known. just over my shoulder you can see that about a dozen firefighters still remain on the scene near a side porch, which is where firefighters tell us that part of the house is most extensively damaged. we have also been learning from the chief that six people are injured, including the one child in critical condition. firefighters were called here at about 4:00 this morning. a three-story twin on fire here in the 800-block of dekalb. the fire quickly grew to two alar alarms. >> heavy fire was visible from the first floor side of the property. that would be the first area that the fire investigators will start looking to determine exactly where the fire started and what caused it. >> is that a living room on the first floor? >> it's hard to tell. it's severely damaged by fire. >> reporter: now,

nbc 10's monique braxton is there. that woman took you through exactly what happened. >> absolutely. this is where it all went down. walking in the parking lot last thursday night as the sun was setting and says it happened so fast, she didn't realize a car was coming up behind her and the next thing she knew, someone yanking on her purse. >> such a shock. i'll never forget that pull. >> reporter: in an exclusive interview, the 65-year-old robbery victim says she feels violated. she relives her frightening encounter with the purse snatcher. i had blood all over my sweater. >> reporter: the victim, we're not identifying, says it happened so quickly, a man in a passing car grabbed her bag. she automatically held on, and dragged past two cars here at the gateway shopping center. >> a felt like a poom and flying with the pocketbook. >> reporter: she showed us bruises under her eyes, on her nose, chest and elbows. >> i hurt. >> reporter: police say two men inside a blue or teal car are responsible. investigators want you to

watched live as we followed the rescue start to finish on nbc 10 news at 11:00 a.m., and monique braxtonarrived at the scene in fact middle of the accident and is live now with a play by play for us. monique? >> reporter: jim, right now, you can see over the shoulder the home that collapsed is boarded up, the door is boarded up as well as the basement to keep people outside it. it was an incredible scene, though, when we arrived. firefighters attempted to rescue a man trapped in the basement of the row home under piles of debris. we had special operations to release the civil crawling through the front and the rear. >> this man was brought out by paramedics. he was trapped in the basement under debris for one hour. he's alert and conscious. going to the hospital for inspection. >> we learned the city agency had been working with the owner to stabilize and sure up the spouse. >> they were doing more to work on the roof and on the rafters and back wall. >> a lot of rain and snow going in the house, no roof, so that's not surprising to me. >> reporter: neighbors on both sides of the clapts

nbc 10's monique braxton joining us live, several st. joe's students part of the story. tell us about that. >> that's right. you can see over my shoulder, cars belonging to four students smashed up here, in 63rd and overbrook. you see the debris from two cars towed. damage happened as the dead driver crashed into parked cars. >> is this the officer -- >> all i heard was freeze, stop, pop, pop, pop. >> reporter: this is what they saw, bullet-riddled minivan. they learned an unarmed driver killed by police. >> one of my neighbors told me he was driving around looking suspicious and he took off and the police took off after him. >> reporter: police commissioner ross says they've received several calls from students here at st. joe's university. they were concerned about the driver of the mini man casing their neighborhood. 19th district police arrived they say the driver wouldn't pull over. >> they cut the male off of the vehicle, got out, told him to stop. he attempts to flee from them, trapping an officer between the car. some other area where he didn't feel like he could

nbc10's monique braxton just arrived on the scene. monique, if you're there, tell us what you see and what's happened so far. >> hey, vai. i am here at the corner of the 100 block of southford street, and firefighters tell us they were called here about 10:20 this morning, and just moments ago, we sua person who had been trapped in the basement under the collapsed debris, freed. he was brought out by a paramedic and taken about a block down the street to an ambulance awaiting his arrival to take him on to be treated at a local hospital. let me take you back now to the scene here that is still in the 100 block of southford street. you see that there are dozens of firefighters on the scene. police have been here outside the tape, trying to keep this entire neighborhood away. this is what we know. we were told that the house was under construction. the first floor collapsed. and a contractor was trapped in the basement. still very sketchy details. investigation still under way. but for about an hour, at least, that person remained down u

monique braxton is following the stoi story for us, and seat belts were a factor in the crash? >> reporter: that's right, jim. we can tell you so much of this investigation remains a mystery. it's still very active. now, investigators are here trying to determine exactly why a car going northbound here on henry would lose control and veer into the southbound lanes. we've learned of nine people involved today, two of them have passed away. >> so you can imagine it was a horrific scene for the first responders. >> reporter: investigators say before 4:00 sunday, two offduty police officers rushed to the scene moments after the deadly accident. they could only do so much. three of the seven crash victims in the car that police say caused the crash were ejected. two women in their 20s seated in the front. >> two adult females up front were ejected from the vehicle upon the collision, and the little 6-year-old was ejected halfway out the back window, and that's the one who did not survive. >> reporter: the 6-year-old who died was one of the four children in the backseat of the car. a

nbc 10's monique braxton is leave. you were there during the rescue. >> reporter: i did. it was a different scene at the time. the street loaded with people. firefighters frantically working to raes rescue the man, and it took an hour to do so. >> they just said, i had to get out, grab what i needed and come on out in case the walls collapse. they didn't want me to get hurt. >> reporter: this is what marie tyson saw. the home next to her collapsed. dozens of police keeping neighbors at the distance while the fire departments special operations unit was attempting to free a man. >> they crawled in through the front and through the rear. >> reporter: firefighters shared this picture taken when they reached the up identified man trapped inside the basement. you see the top of the head own the left, and what looks like black bags on the right. they are inflatable devices placed on stable wood supports. the air bags are used to lift or provide a space under debris that firefighters can crawl through. we went to the special operations center for a demonstration. >> we were stab

nbc 10 monique braxton is live where firefighters are working to prevent other families suffering the same tragedy. monique? >> reporter: that's right. you know, we were here in the neighborhood with the american red cross and norristown firefighters as they passed out smoke alarms when we learned a second child from the already deadly fire passed away. she was rushed to the hospital saturday morning and died hours ago. this precious momentum of two young fire victims was share by the little girl's aunt seen here speaking with the firefighter. this 11-year-old die today. her 6-year-old sister passed away saturday. >> yelling for help. calmed 911. the building was on fire. two daughters were in there. >> reporter: neighbors recall their dad screaming for help as the inferno swept through their home. a memorial grows outside the house in the 800 block of decal. watching relatives of the deceased pause to reflect on their own losses. man the 74-year-old seen here with his grandchildren. >> he liked to play cards. he liked to play sports, loved his baseball. be with the family. be with bo
