brazil... i don't... i would not characterize brazil as a superpower. i would characterize china as a potential superpower. the only superpower is still the united states. now, brazil is an emerging power, is an important global player. there are issues of interest to the world. go talk about agriculture. you cannot have a reasonable conversation about agriculture without talking to brazil, because brazil is the most productive agricultural nation on earth. you cannot have a reasonable conversation, an intelligent conversation, about climate change without brazil at the table. about increasing the international security, president lula tried in 2010 to have a say on how to bring iran to the conversation. it was a failed attempt. it did not work. but brazil... we believe in brazil that we have a vocation to promote peace. and we can, i think, be a positive presence in the world. it depends on how we use our assets. but brazil has, under president lula... it started with cardosa, continued, was deepened by president lula, two leaders that, by the way, wer

sao paulo, brazil.ith its crowded boulevards and massive skyscrapers, it seems as wealthy and sophisticated as any city in the world. sao paulo is unique among latin american cities. in the early part of the 20th century, when places like rio de janeiro copied traditional european styles of construction, sao paulo was following a distinctly american model of urbanism. imitating the forms of chicago and new york, sao paulo built upward, growing vertically very quickly. but in a huge ring around the central city lies a very different urban environment. here, stretching for miles, is a city of self-built structures in various stages of completion. they line hillsides and rocky streets where some of sao paulo's newest immigrants struggle to build homes from brick and cement. where some of sao paulo's alaide and her family came to sao paulo from northeastern brazil. brazil is just an unjust country.

but in fact, brazil is a growing superpower. it's gone through an extraordinary transformation in the past 20 years. so the last time that i was there was 1997. if i was to go back to rio or sao paolo now, would i see a

different than what was created in brazil in the 1500s. different than what was going on in jamestown. and a similar time. , because what you have now is in the small islands, you have very unusual situation. you have a very small number of wealthy white planters, and within 20 years the only people that can afford to purchase as much land and is much labor were very rich people. modern -- mom and pop shops operating here. a very small class of wealthy white planters some of them got so rich moved back to england and manage plantations from a distance. very small population of english subjects that on the land and the mills and everything. slightly larger but not significantly larger class of employees, clerks, bookkeepers, merchants and field supervisors then,ll supervisors, and the vast majority of people in places like barbados or antigua or other english sugar islands -- you have tens of thousands enslaved africans. this system, producing sugar almost exclusively. sugar is still, even at the prices falling, it is still so valuable. the

, northeast brazil, came close to capetown, south africa. capetown was often a landing point for ships before they made their way across the long atlantic voyage and this ship came too close to shore, got caught in swells in a storm, and struck rocks about 100 yards, 350 feet or so, from shore. the captain was captaining the ship, tried to salvage what he could from the crew. they attempted a rescue from ship to shore. he rescued himself. he res i couldcued along with a rescued about half of the 400 enslaved mozambiquens aboard. the other half of those who had been captured from the interior of africa and brought on board the ship in early december, perished in those waves that night. >> lonnie bunch, recently the image of a young syrian boy who died who drowned became the image of a migrant crisis taking place right now in europe. its humanized that crisis that's happening. that is what you want to do with this? does that humanize the slave trip? >> in many ways history museums tend to tell the grand story and often forget to humanize them.

francine: talk to me about brazil.lked a little bit about emerging markets and the turmoil in emerging markets. brazil is going through a really, really rough time independently of what is happening in china. how do you see that business developing? ana: so our brazilian business for quite a while actually was not performing as well as we would have liked. and that is quite clear, and i acknowledge we did not do as well as we should have over the last couple years. the last year, 18 months, we have done a lot better in terms of cost cutting. we have de-risked the bank, which is very important. we have strengthened the management also. recently, we have appointed a new ceo. our current ceo has done a very good job on the team on that side. it is not going to be easy, and i think brazil has -- there is two -- let's say two possibilities. one is the one we believe in and as always, brazil has had a number of the situations in the past, has always taken the path of making the reforms which are not easy for the people and t

many of the elements were developed in brazil. they are not being put together into a total system yet. you have a mixture of medieval forms, medieval technology and modern technology. is all kind of mixed together. but once you take this basic technology of sugar production and insert it into a different geography, the small little islands in the caribbean, the dynamics change enough that a different country with a different resource and a different level of investment money takes the stuff being developed in brazil slowly, and turns it in the span of a couple of decades, into the modern plantation system. that launches the rapid expansion of modern sugar development. we move from brazil to barbados, get the english involved. that's where we're heading. the pre-sugar history of barbados matches that of virginia and new england. english companies are looking for places to plant colonists and make money. you have small companies putting together expeditions to settle in the caribbean. they are thinking they might grow something use
