the developer, bre properties paid 41 plus million dollars for that site on two parcels there. we are told by an employee of the developer, bre properties that they were actually 2 or 3 weeks ahead of schedule on this project as they worked to finish it and they hoped to be opening maybe in late may or june to start preleasing at the end of this month so this was a project that was well under way, again 360 units were planned for that building as it covered two major blocks on mission bay. on the ground floor they expected to have 23,000 square feet of retail space, this was a huge investment that this company made in this project, when you do the math, apparently the costs came out to $630,000 per unit that they were going to be renting out here later this year, here in 2014. the development team for this company was over in emoryville when they got word of this fire they began rushing to the scene to see what information they could gather. this is a large apartment complex project that was under way and it now appears they may be rebuilding nearly from scratch. in the news ro

talking to the developer bre on the block 5 site, they started construction or demolition as soon as they were able to get in there to remove any safety hazards to allow 4th street to reopen. they're anticipating it's going to take probably 4 to 6 week to finish demolition. they're hopeful -- the construction type is you have two floors of concrete podium for your parking and then you have the stick bolt because the fire is on the top part of the building, they're hopeful once they clean off the demolition that they'll be able to reuse the concrete podium and move from there. their other site is block 11 which is located to the west, the 188 unit that was unaffected and they're already working on that project. and the other interest is right next to the west of the site is the future children's park which was slated to start construction in a couple weeks. it's probably going to be delayed a couple weeks to allow demolition to occur, but luckily nothing had started yet so we didn't have any damage to the children's park. the rest of the construction, over 1300 units of residential un

the actual fire happened with the developer called bre. the contractor is suffolk. well because their new boss had known to me in my dpw days. i'm sorry the fire occurred there. it appears the fire started above ground. they were doing some welding. we don't know what occurred there. i will be very patient to wait until the investigation is concluded in detail by the fire department and by the contractors themselves. it is somewhat of about 180 units that most -- most of which was destroyed in this fire and they are gonna have to make some's sesments -- some assessments. i think we're very lucky that the fire didn't jump anymore. i'm down here today, my primary concern, for the actual residents that were affected across the street. we have some 30 units that had to be evacuated, both for the residents and for their animal friends. i am thankful to human services, to the red cross, to animal care control, to our apartment association, part of our good samaritan program and to some hotels in and around the city that would have taken on a responsibility to help with th
