that we're here to support exclusive breastfeeding or long-term breastfeeding as a vehicle to promote childhood obesity and all the fabulous things that come along with it. volunteers, there's definitely a place for volunteers. i would leave it to local programs to figure out how best they can use them. we can never have enough human resources. what we need is assistance change. perhaps these could be the detailed people. we know formula people have detailed people. they change the name of a formula. they get to the doctor's office and, boom, there's a new thing on the horizon. we don't have breastfeeding detail people. make the volunteers could be the breastfeeding detail that go out and do these, you know, lunch and learns for docs. i think there's a way to do this. we'll have to kind of think through this. locally, collaboratively, working together but we've got to get rid of the problems that have been created by the external environment so that our moms and babies don't suffer needlessly. and wic doesn't have to -- you know, do fits to make this happen. >> one of the things -- an

[laughter] and i got the job. but i know that i was lucky, number one. i was interviewing with the president that had just had a child himself and was very understanding and open-minded. but none of the most people are nowhere near as lucky as i was, particularly right now with the job market the way it is. many people cannot be picky about the jobs that they take. many people do not have access to any kind of family leave policies whatsoever, no flexible working arrangements. many people do not even have it paid sick day. so they are struggling every day to find affordable child care. or someone to work after an aging parent which is becoming more the issue. scrambling to make things work in the usual arrangements fall through. all of us have been through that. so i spend a lot of time hoping and praying that everything will work out just perfectly. i remember those days. the delicate balance of perfection. and as all the parents in this room know, it is never perfect, ever. but here

pampers, breastfeeding, it is all great. >> that is right. we think about flexibility these days in elder care, child care, women in the labor force. but there is increasing returns for higher education and a change in the nature of the jobs we will have. instead of having one job in a lifetime, it's typical worker will probably have five jobs. it involves a lot of retraining and relearning. so for many men and women, the reality is they will need to be lifelong learners, and the flexibility to get into a community college or get more training is productivity enhancing, but it is so important for all workers. >> we have not really mentioned the other important factor, and that is that males, the spouses, because of the recession, many in construction and other areas have lost their job. they are home. some are stepping up to the plate. but many need to understand that there's so many resources they can tap into to help their families and they do not have to be frustrated. i think there are a lot of good examples of that. we up to make sure th

attack legislation that says the hospital should not sabotage breast feeding but should support breastfeeding? how does it sabotage breast feeding? mothers get infant formula right at birth. it is not that people want to be mean. it is a policy. it is an archaic policy that needs to be changed. there are hospitals that have embraced policies. oregon has wonderful hospitals. northern california does. we have very good models. i would love to have more of them throughout the country. infant formula -- my time is almost up. moms get very confused with marketing messages. they come and say "can i have breast milk in a can?" there is no such thing. they get free formula when they leave the hospital. they get free formula at their doorstep. this has to stop. our mothers are suffering. our babies are getting fatter. nobody wants that. my time is up. i had more to say in my written testimony. thank you for indulging me. >> chairman miller, ranking member klein, i am director of federal programs for the national school board association. as a former child nutrition advocate and an advocate for school
