so he came and he played for breckenridge high school and he was a star athlete and he played football. probably no bigger than 5-foot 1 inches and he played baseball and may have been even a better baseball coach and he also played basketball. so he was one of four men from high school was offered a scholarship to southwestern university. so the interesting thing about him was that he grew up in a community which was segregated. he came from the valley and part of his family was anglo. and so he came to san antonio and sort of found this area to navigate. so he was the kind of person who sort of focused on what needed to be done. so he never allowed himself or his players to think about the kinds of conflicts or hostilities that they were facing. so no matter what they say before or after, if you beat him that takes care of the problem. but at the same time the interesting thing about him is that he was a product of the mexican-american generation and it came into being when there was a very strong assimilation process going on in the schools and he really bought into it. he had the c
