breckenridge. thank you very much for being with us tonight.te your being willing to talk with us about the subject. >> thank you for having me. >> can you tell me a little bit more, tell us a little bit more about you changing your mind, the transformation that you -- that you had from your initial views on the death penalty after your partner was killed to how you feel about it now? >> it's really a simple answer, actually. as a christian i have to respect the dignity and the value of human life. and that counts even for people who do horrible things. i just -- i can't be part of when this person is going to be executed years after the event. it's not in the heat of the moment. like i said, as a christian i have to respect life. i have to stand up for it. and as i said i just can't do what i see is not revenge and support the death penalty. >> the vote to repeal the death penalty in new hampshire this week it came really, really close. the repeal vote was very strong in the house and then in the senate, it ended up dying an a 12-12 vote becau

breckenridge to run for president.he people who didn't like a douglas and the people he didn't like breckenridge, they met and they picked mr. bell to run for president. the democrats ran three candidates for president in 1860, an interesting situation. the republicans up north ran one candidate, and when the one candidate won the election, people in south were shocked, horrified, dismayed. they started dropping out of the union. south carolina dropped out. florida dropped out soon thereafter and had a big celebration up in tampa. they were happy to leave the union, become a separate, independent state. that's when they get all involved with what was happening down there during the american civil war. as i said, there was a lot of support for the confederacy in north florida, but down in south florida we have a different situation. key west was the largest city in the state at the time, key west. people don't normally think about these days. it was the largest city in the state. key west was originally established like

so he came and he played for breckenridge high school and he was a star athlete and he played football. probably no bigger than 5-foot 1 inches and he played baseball and may have been even a better baseball coach and he also played basketball. so he was one of four men from high school was offered a scholarship to southwestern university. so the interesting thing about him was that he grew up in a community which was segregated. he came from the valley and part of his family was anglo. and so he came to san antonio and sort of found this area to navigate. so he was the kind of person who sort of focused on what needed to be done. so he never allowed himself or his players to think about the kinds of conflicts or hostilities that they were facing. so no matter what they say before or after, if you beat him that takes care of the problem. but at the same time the interesting thing about him is that he was a product of the mexican-american generation and it came into being when there was a very strong assimilation process going on in the schools and he really bought into it. he had the c
