let's bring in brendan buck, former press secretary to john weiner. good to see you again.n it comes to trump's sentencing, is justice being served here, even though he won't face any jail time? >> i think so. this was the case of all the ones being brought against donald trump, it seemed the weakest on the substantive grounds. the underlying facts of the case, having an affair with stormy daniels and paying her off, all kinds of things in any normal world maybe would disqualify somebody for higher office but bringing him to court on this always seemed a little shaky. i think a lot of democratic analysts have had admitted as such. i think, when you turn around and we went through all of this drama, you know weeks of hearings and a trial and deliberations, ultimately resulting in a sentence that doesn't really amount to much of anything. i think, it just underscores how unnecessary all of this really was. i think there were much more serious charges he was facing from jack smith, his involvement in january 6. i thought they should have sought a trial on that but unfortunatel

brendan buck, i would like to bring you in the conversation. jonathan makes a good point that it was wise of mike johnson not to gavel the first vote. he had an inclination that he might be able to get those two, ralph norman and keith self to come around to vote for him. he was successful. he did it. but to what end? how much do you think they just ran out of time because they had to begin today at noon with this process? do you suspect he had an inclination that they were very close, and he could probably do a cloak room chat with them, were they not to be pleased enough to vote for him on the first go around, and what do you expect that might have entailed? what do you think it is they will have wanted? >> i'll say this, when the vote, the original vote finished and there were only three of them, i think everybody at that point knew, mike johnson was going to be speaker of the house again, and it was only a matter of time. when kevin mccarthy lost on the first ballot, he lost 19. that ultimately became 20 on the second ballot. that was a lot

also with us, brendan buck, former aide to speaker paul ryan and john boehner.lise jordan, former aide to president george w bush. ryan, take us behind the scenes and through the week ahead. what are the expectations you're hearing there? >> listen, this is going to be a make or break week for many of these nominees or these picks that donald trump has made for his cabinet, many of them controversial, many of them who will have an uphill battle in terms of confirmation. and they really need to nail these hearings in order to make many of these republican senators who may be on the fence, comfortable in voting yes for them. remember, not one of these picks needs a single democratic vote to get over the finish line to be confirmed, but the margins are narrow. there's only 53 republicans, so that means they could only lose four republican votes. with j.d. vance breaking a tie, were they to become the next secretary of whatever department that trump has picked them to be. and that means this is going to be a very busy week, and that senators are going to have to pay

also joining us, brendan buck, former aide to house speaker paul ryan and john boehner. smikle is former executive director of the new york state democratic party. both are msnbc political analyst. yamiche, what more do we know about the actions the trump administration is taking against the ai programs? >> well, president trump has really made eliminating diversity, equity and inclusion programs a key part of the first few days of this administration. and he's really, in some ways, fulfilling a campaign promise that he has been talking about and did talk about on the campaign trail at length and repeatedly. if we walk through some of the things that he's done just in the last few days here, he had federal staff, as you said, dei staff placed on paid leave starting at 5 p.m. yesterday. he also ordered all dei related offices and programs to close. he removed all public dei websites and social media accounts, and president trump revoked an executive order signed by president lyndon b johnson in 1965 that banned discrimination in federal contracting, and that was seen as a
