senator udall issued a statement that says i have lost confidence in john brennan. i am concerned about the director's apparent inability to find any flaws in the agency he leads. the white house is defending john brennan, but one would imagine that the senators on this intelligence committee are not going to let it simply end here with an apology from john brennan. >> well, i suspect not. you've had several senators including senator widen demanding to know having a clear accountability of what happened, who, perhaps, ordered this intrusion. how it happened. i think there will probably be some internal wrangling over this because, look, the white house has said john brennan has said and a lot of people on capitol hill have said they want to get this report out and put this entire matter behind them, and i think that not just the findings of this internal cia

yesterday with john brennan's apology some. >> so according to the cia, john brennan, because of the seriousness of senator feinstein's allegations asked the cia inspector general david buckley to conduct an internal review of the buckley came up w number of cias, attorneys and specialists inappropriately accessed a database that was supposed to be accessed only by the senate committee staff by agreement of the cia. the cia will dispute the way a lot of people are interpreting the finding here as well as the

response -- the response by john brennan that you just played, the question is whether or not the cia had hacked into this computer in an effort to thwart the committee's investigation and john brennan said absolutely not. the definition of the word hack may be what's at play here because at least as far as the cia is concerned they can't hack into their own computer system. this was a system that the cia provided to the senate staff, but i suspect that a lot of people are going to say that's splitting hairs and indeed, the cia did hack into this system to determine whether or not the cia had an internal review of the interrogation program, that according to senator feinstein and others, actually confirmed the findings of the senate's own report. >> let me ask you, there are some very angry senators on capitol hill today. senator udall issued a statement that says i have lost confidence

so those claims by senator feinstein, the ones john brennan called beyond the scope of reason, it turns out they were dead on. so dead on that brennan himself actually apologized yesterday to feinstein and the committee's vice chair, saxby cham bliss. hours ago, a member of the senate intelligence committee tweeted, the cia broke into senate computer files and tried to have senate staff prosecuted and unacceptable in a democracy.

margaret brennan is joining us here in new york. margaret what are you hearing? >> scott, i've been e-mailing with some sources, some u.s. officials who say it is actually too early to tell. they are looking at what the ukrainian interior minister and his adviser have said they blame the foot at the separatist groups for shooting down this aircraft. u.s. officials are looking at that looking at the reports, saying it is too early to say if the information is accurate at this time. they have been very carefully tracking the type of hardware that the u.s. government believes that russia has given to some of these separatist groups these pro russian separatist groups that has included some surface to air missiles heavier hardware there that the u.s. blames russia for handing over to these groups. but it is not believed to be ukrainian, military hardware. this is being blamed on some of the pro russian groups u.s. can't verify that yet. >> we also have on the telephone our aviation expert sully sullenberger former u.s. air ways pilot who famously landed his aircraft

i agree with senator mark udall, cia director john brennan should resign. that's not all.is a lot more. i smell a ratted and a squishy apology from the cia director should not push this matter under the rug. earlier today, cia director john brennan apologized toot senate intelligence committee leaders for spying on them. that's not a mistake. that is a crime and a big one. on the cia's own web site, it says domestic spying by the cia is a crime. and the only way it is not a crime and this is where i get a bit suspicious, is if the attorney general of the united states authorizes domestic spying. that, of course, would be eric holder. so, did the attorney general authorize domestic spying? if he did, he needs to tell us why. he owes the american people those answers. and if eric holder didn't authorize the spying, he needs to do his job and prosecute, convene a grand jury immediately. i don't buy for one second the department of justice previous statement that there is not enough evidence for a a criminal investigation. that statement is a lie. testimony t. smells like a co

margaret brennan, state department correspondent, has been talking with her witnesses all day. margaret? margaret brennan since the beginning of the conflict six months ago, both sides have accused one another of causing the tension. but the obama administration says there is clear evidence russia is providing the separatists with military support, actions it has warned could have fatal consequences. moments after the tragedy, ukraine's president petro poroshenko said it was not an accident but an act of terrorism. ukraine's government said the airliner had been shot down by a missile and claimed there was evidence of russian military involvement. then pointed to comments made on twitter by separatist leader igor girkin who earlier took credit for shooting down a military aircraft. he warned, do not fly in our skies. later ukraine security agency released recordings of what it claimed were intercepted phone calls between a russian intelligence officer and separatist leader in ukraine. we couldn't verify the recording but a voice is heard saying -- we have just shot down a plane

kerry is in cairo tonight trying to negotiate a cease-fire, and that is where we find or margaret brennan. margaret. >> reporter: kerry said today that he supports an egyptian proposal for 48-hour halt in fighting followed by intensive talks. but hamas already rejected that plan had when it was first floated a week ago and said it will keep firing until gaza's closed border with egypt is opened to allow in food and medical aid and allow some trapped palestinian civilians out. but both the rells rel-- israelis and the egyptians fear that would allow hamas to smuggle in more weapons. further complicating the deal-making is the fact that neither the u.s. nor israel have diplomatic relations with hamas. so kerry called top diplomats in turkey and qatar to ask for their help. scott, adding urgency to all of this is the growing number of civilian casualties as israeli's ground invasion advances. >> pelley: margaret brennan traveling with the secretary. margaret. thank you. in our other major story tonight, many of the 298 dead from the shootdown of malaysia airlines flight 17 are being prepared

morgan brennan has more. >> reporter: alcoa shed light on a big much er shift from aluminm to industrial. >> it's a transformation in high gear, you see the value at business makes up roughly 59% off the revenues but almost 70% off the profits. >> reporter: alcoa is concentrating on producing parts for airplanes, heavy trucks, turbines and building supplies going from aluminum but nickel and titanium. it's a transition from three years ago when aluminum prices were tumbling and over production in china. that forced alcoa to cut back on mining and focus increasingly on finished products. a higher margin business. rolled out expansion plans of several area space related facilities and last month announced the acquisition of a jet engine parts maker for $3 billion. >> we think the next leg is aerospace. the first accusation highlights what alcoa can put together. >> reporter: so far the strategy seems to be working despite being booted, the stock claimed dramatically as products accounted for more and more of the revenue. >> the business which area space is a component went from 43% to 80%.

but the sector this year has been lagging behind the broader market, morgan brennan explains why and whether these stocks are now a good deal for investors. >> reporter: despite perceived safety and high-paying evidents, the telecom sector is under performing. so far this year, the sector gained 4.5% while the s&p 500 is up seven. analysts say telecom is trading at the biggest evaluation discount in more than a decade. >> there are a lot of concerns going on with a broader industry with respect to competition, with respect to some of the transactions that are taking place in the marketplace and so that's adding an additional layer in terms of overall concern that's keeping valuations where they are today relative to the market. >> reporter: but key trends could make some telecom companies more attractive to investors, and they were apparent in verizon's earnings. first, the growing popularity of tablets. in verizon's second quarter, the number of people that signed up for a plan quadrupled offsetting declines in smart phone subscriptions, which is a market harder to grow with 80% of

morgan brennan has more on what this all means. >> reporter: america's fourth largest wireless provider has been shaking up the industry, aggressively slashing prices to spark competition with larger u.s. rivals, sprint, at&t and verizon. so far, the plan seems to be working. t-mobile continues to add monthly wireless subscribers and now, it's attracting potential buyers. >> we've always said in the long term scale is extremely important. i have to point out we have multiple options to create long-term scale for this company, one of which is been long rumors and one possibility. >> reporter: multiple options is right. while it's widely believed sprint could put a bid in, another company beat it to the punch. today a company confirmed the $15 billion offer for majority stake sending shares of t-mobile higher, even as a broader market sole off. experts say such a deal could face fewer regulatory hurdles, since it would maintain the current number of wireless carriers, but it also strikes right at the center of a heated price war, and that's redefining the u.s. wireless space. expects say
