brennan: absolutely. we have gone to great lengths and briefed foreign partners about how we learned some painful lessons as a result of 9/11. and so, the intelligence, law enforcement, homeland security, other communities are working better today than ever before. there is a tremendous volume of information and data that is out there. some of it, accurate, so of it, bogus. trying to make sense of it all and put the other pieces together is challenging. i think we're less vulnerable to the penetration, but physical because of the actions taken. as we have seen with the internet as well as with isil taking advantage of technology that allows them to communicate in a very secure fashion, it is certainly worrisome. judy: second row, yes. jim: jim man, author. johns hopkins. in your list of challenges, you did not mention china, though there are several areas like cyber, for example, where it might seem to fit in one way or another. where does it fit into your list of challenges? mr. brennan: as i said, i cou

we put brennan up on the helicopter and get them out of there. we had about a 2.5 hour walk back to the mud hut and as we started walking back, we had had started with 350 rounds and rocket launchers and grenades and five days later, i had three different guns on me none of which were my own and no rocket launcher and probably 10 grenades and i had extra plates. i could feel the weight, the loss, the burden in which these men carried in it was not because they were not having fun. wasn't because they were tired and want to go home. it wasn't because they didn't want to do it anymore, it was because they used every single tomorrow they would have so we can live today and it was now our job to do it they were going to do. we just didn't have them in our lives anymore. we walked back and after something like this, we have to learn what caused this. how could we have done it better? what scenario led to this? we write these sworn statements and we call them after action reviews. on the following day, my company commander came up to me and said i want

then kerry and brennan, they don't talk to each other. maybe kerry doesn't get briefings from the cia. i have no idea. but if brennan is saying the same thing to kerry and the president, we've got an administration that's going two different directions. >> yeah. you know, we've talked to a lot of people about donald trump, and they say, look, he has a chance to win if he sticks to the issues. is he going to be able to stick to the issue of terrorism and what he might do about it? >> well, i think, you know, world events are going to require him to. i mean, this is what -- this -- when these things happen, it dominates people's attention for two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight days. and this is something i think he's comfortable with. i think he has a full understanding of what he has to do. it's an area where i think the american people trust him a lot more than the people who have failed. no one wants to exploit this. but we do want to come out of this with a president who can protect us. >> what's being done right now, do you thin

brennan: unfortunately, seasonally it will get slower.uly and august 10 to be a lot more thin and less liquid and less involvement from investors. seasonally we are going to slow down. from the current levels. but that is what we expected already and it is embedded into our numbers. well.an did remarkably it is my sense that the strength they have in a macro businesses, specifically the fx businesses, were probably really helpful. when we think of how that translates to the rest of their peers, citi is the most likely for them to show thick results this quarter. -- gethat extra that next week. vonnie: there are a few things that were tailwinds that will be around in the next quarter. lower than forecast legal expenses. what is the global economic environment -- does jpmorgan suffer? brennan: so you are correct that there were some one-timers, but even if we x out those one-timers, jpmorgan's results still beat estimates. the tax rate was a headwind which almost completely offset that. the benefit only added about a nickel. still better th

in the meantime, margaret brennan is at the state department tonight. margaret? >> reporter: scott, well, the u.s. has been referring to this as an uprising, but frankly, american diplomats have had a hard time getting a hold of anyone inside erdogan's government, so they're not clear on who is in control. now the u.s. embassy has confirmed shots fired in ankara and in istanbul, and they're warning americans that they need to stay indoors, shelter in place. secretary of state john kerry did publicly call for stability. now, keep in mind, turkey is a nato member, which binds the u.s. to militarily protect it. it's also a key partner in the fight against isis. in fact, the u.s. has about 1,500 american troops located in the south along that syrian border at an air base known as incirlik. that's where the u.s. has launched many, many air strikes against isis in both iraq and syria. so that's a key priority to maintain the safety and security, and we're told right now there is no threat to those american troops, but there's increasingly concern about erdogan's govern

margaret brennan is standing by in warsaw as we await for the president here. let's go back to you again, margaret. >> reporter: jeff, the president is just concluding a meeting with european leaders, as well as the secretaries of state and defense john kerry and ash carter. we examine the president to address the police shootings last night. we understand on the plane here to warsaw, the president was watching news coverage of what he describes as disturbing images of baton rouge and minnesota and laying out what he called racial disparities within the american criminal justice system. he made those remarks publicly last night. since the dallas shooting which happened just hours after he addressed the matter, we haven't heard directly from the president, though, we do know he has been getting updates on this shooting, that is what the white house has been telling us. so we expect the president to make some remarks shortly. his reactions to these police shootings. last night, his appeal was a very emotional one saying and really making the case for what many pr

has permeated a global fear. >> earlier brennan, john brennan, the cia director, did say our effortes have not reduced the group's terrorism capable or global reach and that's what he is talking about. when you hear secretary kerry talking about isis or they don't want to even call it isis, the islamic city, getting dessplat ex-goes back to how this administration how president obama and the white house have talk about this threat, this deadly threat, all along. starting out with the -- they're the jv team, when after a beheading the president is playing golf. again and again and again they try to dismiss the threat, dismiss our concerns here at home, and then, again, there's another murder. there's another terrorist attack, over and over and over again. >> and then at the same time we have events seeing we'll never allow another atrocity like world war ii yet they're targeting christians and it's happening today. and you're absolutely correct. they try to diminish what happens here and what happens overseas, and to me i think that's just so disingenuous and we're luring citizens at h

cia director john brennan also this week talked about the fact that the u.s. is leading the coalition against isis in both iraq and syria. he added this, as well. >> it would be surprising to me that isil is not trying to hit us, both in the region, as well as in our homeland. if anybody here believes that, you know, the u.s. homeland is hermetically sealed, and that the daesh or isil would not consider that, i think, i would guard against that. >> mr. chairman, what's your best assessment about the current threat to the u.s. homeland. >> well, i believe the cia has taken a sober look at this. we've long been saying from the intelligence committee that it appears to us that isis and al qaeda are both growing. and so when you look at the potential for an attack in the united states, what i'm afraid of, is that these attacks like you saw in orlando, like you saw in san bernardino, are going to become the norm. and about i guess it was about two years ago the fbi came before us at the committee, and said very clearly that they were concerned about the radicalizat

-- brennan: we [laughter] mr.ve been a number of developments in the turkish political scene over the last several years with ogan with the consolidation of power and authority. it sits astride a very unsettled area. with the challenges the kurdish presented turkey, we know there have been stresses and strains on the government. there's been a number of actions the government has taken to try to address some of what they perceived as opposition domestically. we were aware of the pressures that the government was under, as well as the sun them in that as sentiments expressed -- well as the sentiments that were expressed. good try anyway, jennifer. director brennan. that's a pretty serious indictment of the obama administration's isis strategy or lack thereof. mr. president, if our efforts have not reduced isis terrorism capability and global reach, then our efforts are failing. and we need a new plan. but that's something that president obama seems unlikely to produce, despite a halfhearted campaign against isis, the president has never, never laid out a comprehensive strategy to defeat the terrorist group. and as a result, isis terrorism capability and global reach are thriving. mr. president, keeping americans safe from isis requires a comprehensive approach. it requires not just containing, but decisively defeating isis abroad. it requires controlling our borders and strengthening our immigration system. it requires us to give law enforcement and intelligence agencies the tools and funding they need to monitor threats abroad and here at home. and it requires us to secure the homeland by addressing security weaknesses that would give terrorist

margaret brennan spoke with leon panetta, a former c.i.a.r, former defense secretary and former white house chief of staff. >> inaction is not an option in syria. because if you stand back, the batuation is going to get worse. look, the best case scenario would be to have assad step down, to have a transitional government be able to establish itself, representing each of the factions that are there, the sunnies, the kurds, the shias. and then, frankly, have the russians and whatever is left of se syrian forces join with the united states in going after to to truly defeat them. that would be the best case scenario. >> reporter: what are the odds of that? >> not very good, not very good. >> reporter: what is the worst- case scenario? >> the worst-case scenario is that assad continues to remain in power, continues to kill syrians. that refugees continue to flow oft of syria. that the russians continue to have a presence there and continue to attack our moderate rorces that were trying to train in syria. and that isis then uses that and creates

. >> john, we heard from the cia director brennan saying isis, the islamic state, does want to hit the u.s., doesn't want to potentially hit u.s. airports, this is after the orlando attack. is it going to cost us more money? >> it's going to cost us some more money, but look, gary, the last few weeks has been good about articulating about the fact that we're fighting almost a world war ii type war and world war iii. a lot of things we're doing that don't make sense in the new world we're in take tsa, for example, i went on the website before the show, about $6.7 billion is what tsa costs last year. $2.3 billion was offset through user fees. about $4.4 billion. that should be done, 900 million passengers. add about 5 or $6 per passenger, pay for tsa. ha should not come out of the government. what else can you do? take the perimeter out. don't take the security perimeter out. take the perimeter out and make sure that people only that are flying come through. that's a mild security, make sure you know who is in the airport. then start with tsa security. which is a problem. we do need to p
