♪♪ >> brennan: welcome back to "face the nation."want to continue our conversation now with senator chris murphy of connecticut. senator, i want to get into the specifics of some of what you are talking to your fellow senators about. but i want to start with something else. i grew up in a town next to sandy hook. i know you represented that district when you were a congressman at the time of the shooting. you spoke on the senate floor quite passionately this week about not just the victims but the survivors, and the ptsd that these little children have just walking back into a classroom, and remembering having to walk over bodies. can you talk a little bit about what this does to a community, to the first responders, and to the survivors? >> especially in these smaller towns, i just think it is important to understand how communities can't come back from this because data says everybody that is killed has 20 people that experienced diagnosable trauma because of that murder. but in these schools, every single kid in sandy hook and uva

i'm margaret brennan in for norah.growing outrage tonight after texas police admit to multiple failures in their response to the school massacre in uvalde, texas. today, we learned that the officer in charge at the time of the shooting ordered law enforcement not to enter the classroom where children were being terrorized by a gunman. those children were repeatedly calling 911, begging for police help while officers waited nearby. but the officer in charge believed the gunman had barricaded himself and was no longer an active shooter. it was a deadly decision. all this was taking place as desperate parents outside the school pleaded with the police to intervene. the texas governor tonight said he was misled about the police response, and is livid. now there's an investigation into not only the gunman, but how police responded to the massacre. and, of course, for the families of the victims, this news is causing even more heartbreak. we have a lot to get to tonight. and cbs' lilia luciano will start us off from uvalde.

we need to treat them like the public servants that they are. >> the brennan center for -- legislatorsive provisions. your basic biggest concern as we head into midterms. >> i concern this year is absolutely the trend of passing restrictive voting legislation continuing. but actually, i think the other trend continuing this year from last year is a trend of laws that are aimed at undermining the electoral process itself. putting more control over elections in partisan hands. we have people running for the office of election officials that are themselves election denialist, people who claim the last election was rigged. my concern is people are going to continue to lose faith in our democratic system, when i think 2020 prove to us that we have a resilient, healthy, free and fair democracy in this country. people need to believe that if it's going to continue to be that free and fair democracy that it is. i worry that people hear these lies and misinformation and they let it undermined their fate. they don't continue to believe in the system that we he have had going for a long time in t
