cnbc's morgan brennan joins us for cnbc on msnbc, day four. give us a sense of what we know about how far apart these two sides are? >> i think there is a lot of space between these two sides, chris, and if it needs to, the union is potentially willing to widen the scope of the strikes. that's the message from united auto workers shawn fain on "morning joe" earlier today. have a listen. >> we still have a long way to go, and that's going to be up to the companies on how this plays out. we'll see how things progress the next few days, and, you know, if we have to amp up pressure, that's what we're going to do. if the companies don't respond to the members' demands we have to do what we have to do. we're far apart on several issues. >> the negotiations cover 145,000 uaw members, across general motors, ford, and stellantis. since the contract expired last friday, are strikes have been coordinated across three facilities, producing the ford bronco, jeep wrangler, and chevrolet colorado among others. but fain saying the union could expand that. ana

cnbc's morgan brennan joins me for cnbc on msnbc. walk us through the fed's decision as they deal with the jump in gas prices, among other considerations? >> we have seen that jump in gas prices, you have seen signs that inflation is sticky, nonetheless, the fed leaving the federal funds rate unchanged at 5 1/4 to 5 1/2%. that had been widely expected. keep in mind, though, even with the pause, at those rates, we're talking about the highest level in 22 years. it was a pause today. but that being said, the interest rate hikes of this cycle, which started in march of 2022 may not be done because the fed did indicate today that it still expects one more hike before the end of the year, and fewer cuts to those interest rates next year than it had previously indicated. that suggests that interest rates are going to stay at these higher levels for longer as it continues to combat the inflation that's higher than officials would like to see. the other thing we got today is the fed's summary of economic projections. we don't get that with e

cnbc's morgan brennan joins us now for cnbc on msnbc. what have we learned from this report? >> the pace of price increases reaccelerated last month, posting the biggest increase of the year, with americans facing higher prices on energy and other goods and services. the consumer price index, cpi, rose a seasonally adjusted .6% for the month, up 3.7 from a year ago. both represented a hotter pace of inflation than the one we saw in july. now, what caused it, well, energy prices were a big factor including a more than 10 1/2% surge in gasoline. transportation services, food costs, prices for new cars and other types of vehicles also contributed. so did rents, though that category was so called shelter inflation, it is actually still slowing. the jump in headline inflation, work your paychecks hard, average hourly earnings declined half a percent for august. if i put this into context here, despite the hotter monthly reading, the rate of inflation has been falling since the 9% peak registered last summer. as for the federal reserve, what matters is something called core cpi. it

paul brennan has been following the hearings at the court in western jerusalem. >> the stakes could scarcelygher. where historic is the one i have heard most used by israeli media. inside that supreme court, and unprecedented panel of 15 judges, the whole panel all gathered together for the first time, and what they are considering in essence is if the israeli far right coalition government should be able to put itself beyond the scrutiny of the country's highest judges. the specific issue in question today is about reasonableness and if the court can roll the government has acted unreasonably, but that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the government's judicial reform program because other proposals it has in the pipeline include exerting greater political patrol -- political control over who can become a judge, and override measure to reinstate laws that have been thrown out by the court and even restrict areas of jurisdiction the court can make rulings on. those kind of rulings actually have implications beyond israel's borders into the occupied palestinian territories becaus
