director brennan, i want to start with you. hamas says they're prepared to receive the non-israeli prisoners when they felt the conditions have been met. -- what they've also said is they will release foreign nationals, not israelis. how do you think this could impact israel's plans for a ground invasion? >> well, certainly, israel has to lytton's to these office. i seem to believe that hamas lacks any credibility at this point. and they may be facing internal divisions within hamas, as well as external pressure coming from arab states such as egypt and qatar, to be at least somewhat accommodating. but i do think it's an effort to try to delay or to make it even more difficult for netanyahu and the israeli war cabinet to make the decision to move in. if there is some prospect or hope that hamas is dangling -- >> director brennan. i don't want to cut you off, but we're gonna go directly to secretary blinken to hear his remarks and come back to you. >> he's coming here to do the following. first, the president will reaffirm the u

former cia director john brennan is here. sir, thank you for your time.n following this story so very closely. you spoke to my colleague jen psaki earlier today. you floated the possibility of israeli sources both human and technical being compromised by hamas. they could've been given a false sense of complacency. can you expand on that for us? >> simone, as you asked the question, how did israeli intelligence missed this, i'm really quite puzzled. i don't know how they missed it. i worked with israeli intelligence and military for many years. they are among the best in the world in terms of their networks and technical sources. so, the gaza strip has always been one of their key intelligence concerns. so, i raise the possibility that some of their sources may have been compromised. hamas was able to carry out this planning for this large-scale multidimensional attack over the course of many months without the israelis catching wind of it. which raises the question about whether or not the sources that the israelis have a relied on for so long in the gaz

i spoke with john brennan yesterday.e talked about not only just kind of a failure of intelligence, but also a failure of imagination, and it's something our colleague raf sanchez as we're talking about in the last 24 hours. they couldn't even conceive that this could happen. as you say, one of the most skilled intelligence agencies in the world, they pride themselves on being able to hear and see what hamas fighters, what iran does, the reach of their intelligence is extraordinary. our colleagues in washington, d.c., courtney and dan, spoke with u.s. military officials, haiti, and they told our colleagues, we were not tracking this. of course, the u.s. and israel shared lots of intelligence, and they work very closely together. u.s. officials told nbc news that if israel knew there was an imminent attack, they did not share it. but also, john brennan was talking, katie, how this would've been an unbelievably complex planning and coordinated operation over months, possibly over a year, maybe as long as the last two years

and i think john brennan is right.re a lot of questions about how an operation of this magnitude could be executed as a surprise, but i think that we are entering a period in which the violence is going to be intent he sort of ask yourself, what is the point? what was hamas trying to achieve here? because it is almost certainly ending with their eradication in a great deal of suffering to the palestinian people as well as israeli people as the israelis mobilize to rightly eradicate the [inaudible]. >> let's talk about third-party actors. that is been a topic that has been raised since last hour since we've been covering this breaking news. you have iran figuring prominently in this, and i've asked several of the professionals, those that have had experience that have all said consistently that it does not seem like hamas would be able to do this with this level of coordination, 2000-plus rockets, et cetera without some type of third-party support. your thoughts? third-party >> the facts are sk, obviously at this point,

of course, john brennan is better equipped than i am to speak to that, but i would also emphasize, youre every bit as much of a threat to every day americans going about their lives as most foreign terrorist organizations. not necessarily in terms of the big dramatic attack like the hamas attack or like 9/11, but things like we see here on an unfortunately all too regular basis, mass shootings, violent killings like the slaughter of a 6-year-old palestinian boy, these are the things that are often inspired by this general atmosphere of violence and in some ways an acceptability of violence. >> let me play a little bit more of christopher wray on the targeting of the jewish community here in this country for you, director brennan. >> i will say that this is a threat that is reaching in some ways sort of historic levels, in part because, as you know all too well, the jewish community is targeted by terrorists really across the spectrum. homegrown violent extremists, foreign terrorist organizations both sunni and shia, domestic violent extremists and in fact our statistics would indicate

brennan, i want to start with you. how concerned are you about a wider conflict?t's happening in terms of what israel's pronouncements are, they're going to bomb and bomb and bomb gaza regardless of the fact there are hostages there, so they're going to bomb, but the people in the region, the countries in the region are saying hang on, we need some restraint and we need some diplomacy. how concerned are you this ends up widening? >> i'm very concerned. i think this is hamas's objective. they knew israel would respond forcefully, with a bombing campaign and a ground incursion, which i believe is going to happen. also, we have to take a look at what iran's role was in it, and if it's uncovered iran played a role and decided to go forward with these atrocious attacks, i think israel is going to have to respond accordingly. i think this is a very worrisome time, and the region is really on the brink of a very broad conflict that i think is going to change the course of middle east history. >> given that israel does not have formal relations with all of the countries i

let's bring in face the nation moderator and chief foreign affairs correspondent margaret brennan. much of the nation has been focused on what happened in israel over the past two weeks, but the president also made the case for ukraine tonight. >> that is right, nora. this is something where he linked the two, saying they are both direct threats to democracy, but also because, if you don't stand up to a dictator or terrorist group, he said that could, as a direct threat to the united states. he is explaining, in these public remarks to the american people, why it is in their interest to spend their tax dollars on these things. israel is already the largest recipient of u.s. foreign aid similarly since world war ii. 150 alien dollars. so, for him to say tonight as he did that this is going to be an unprecedented commitment to israel, that is a significant statement. but then, turning to ukraine and making the case that, frankly, nora, many republicans had criticized him for failing to make to the public, which was to explain why the united states has been pumping in tens of billions

brennan, i'm thank you for being here.hear your thoughts on this new york times reporting that the cia issued at least two reports warning of the potential for violence. what do you make of that? >> well, alex, obviously, i don't know anything about this cia report. but the u.s. intelligence will pick up indicators that something may be brewing. that might have been the case here, that there were some indications that hamas was planning to carry out some type of operation. as you pointed out, frequently, these type of general warnings or sense do not have the specific details of the tactical operations that are being planned. it was very similar to before 9/11, the u.s. intelligence community, and cia head indications that al-qaeda was planning something big. but we didn't know what, where, or when it would happen. so therefore, i think the israelis missed some of these things. but also, didn't take the prudent steps necessary in order to protect against something that might have happened, or was going to happen. >> can i
